this really sucks for my friend who is/was in charge of the FPG:(
Ford Motor Co. announced Friday that it would "sell or significantly scale
back" its operations at the Arizona Proving Ground in Yucca, a move that
likely will leave 40 Lake Havasu City workers without a job.
According to one estimate, the Proving Ground has an annual economic impact
of $4.4 million to Lake Havasu City.
The state, county and local governments offered Ford a $500,000 incentive
package to keep the Yucca facility open. Of that, $40,000 would have come
from Lake Havasu City.
But by Friday afternoon, "we learned that they intend to let our incentive
package expire on Jan. 31," said Jonas Peterson, Mohave County deputy
director of economic development.
Buster Johnson, District 3 representative for the Mohave County Board of
Supervisors, said he wasn't surprised by the news.
"It was a lost cause," he said. "Business is business, and it made good
business sense to them."
The question now is what will become of the Proving Ground? Johnson said he
expects several businesses - possibly another automaker - will vie for the
property. But whatever happens, he said that land wouldn't be turned into
housing development.
"A lot of people see this as a negative, but I see it as a positive to try
and attract new commercial development," he said.
This past summer, Ford announced it would close one of its proving grounds
as part of its Way Forward plan. The automaker also plans to cut 30,000 jobs
and close 16 plants by 2012.
Such massive restructuring is due to Ford's falling market share and sales.
The company announced Thursday that it lost $12.7 billion in 2006, the worst
in the company's 103-year history.

it don't add up they just installed a $1m environmental test chamber at the proving grounds, -32deg through 140deg complete with rain, snow, wind and a car shaker rack....oh well that accounts for 1/1200th of last years losses:rolleyes:

rut row.....
It's probably more like a consolidation of those facilities into other facilities they have around the country...just so happens they closed the one nearest you.
Maybe if you and all the old car show buddies had bought some new cars from Ford you'd still have it.
