Is there a good starting point to place the motor at for an 18 foot shallow V bottom? pump set back, Jeff Bennett bottom 800 hp...

i was told to put it about 18 inches from inside the back transom

I would think the length of the driveshaft would govern this.
You also want the motor mounted at an angle that follows the pump angle, but you want a slight up angle in the shaft to eliminate vibration.

Put a Jetaway on the pump (that way you can disconnect it any time you like), and then mount just far enough for the coupler to clear onto the jetaway. I have no idea how far in inches that'd be tho, and yes, match the angle of the pump shaft.

I would say that it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. For a circle race application (for example) I would put the engine further forward. The idea is to create a pivot point to help the boat turn. For a family deal then you probably want the most room possible for seating and such.

Ask jack or dave to weigh the hull and find the CG. they'll give you ideas from there on where the motor should go.

I'm like'n that idea. Boat should probably be in full dress to find the CG. Would likely make it a more neutral handling boat. :)
