Overton Beach Marina to begin moving at Lake Mead; closure noted
Tuesday, January 30, 2007 10:16 PM PST
LAKE MEAD - The Overton Beach Marina is scheduled to begin moving from the Overton Arm of Lake Mead to the existing marinas operated by Forever Resorts at Callville Bay and Temple Bar. The marina will depart Overton Beach at midnight today and travel about one mile-per-hour down the Overton Arm.
When the marina reaches the Middle Point location of Lake Mead, the south end of the marina with 45 boats in slips will separate and head to Temple Bar. The north marina, with 80 boats in slips, will enter the Virgin Basin and travel through the area known as The Narrows and head to Callville Bay.
Temporary closure of The Narrows from noon to 6 p.m. PST on Friday is necessary for the safe relocation of the marina, according to a press release from the National Park Service.
The marina is moving due to lowering water levels on Lake Mead.
Facts about the marina configuration and other data:
The structure will be 520 feet wide and more than 700 feet long.
Twenty houseboats and 12 smaller boats will be used to power and maneuver the marina.
The speed will be 1-1.5 miles per hour.
The structure will weigh 2,858,750 pounds.
The operation will run continuously for 40-48 hours.
The structure will have 40-50 employees physically on the structure during the relocation.
NPS and Nevada Department of Wildlife vessels will serve as escorts
The National Weather Service is providing custom weather forecasting briefings and products prior to, and during the actual move.
Public facilities at Overton Beach will remain open, according to the press release. Those areas include the public launch ramp, the restrooms, the fish cleaning station, and the ranger station. The shoreside facilities operated by the concessioner will close March 31.

We'll be there. We saw the last move, Las Vegas Harbor when it moved to Hemminway. At 1 mph there's not a lot of excitement, and the whole time you're praying for no wind. Usually very calm this time of year. Wonder how they are going to move it past Echo with all the shallows there? Funny to see all those boats, restaurant, fuel station, being moved enmass

Dilligaf, very interesting stats, but the 520x700 section of marina is going to have to be cut down a little to get thru the narrows, don't you think?

Our house overlooks the lake, i remember watching the last move, it was pretty wild to see this huge barge slowly making its way across the basin, took the thing all day to go not very far to its new location, the overton move will take a couple days i'm sure.
