I went there about 3 yrs ago & the thing that really stuck w/me were the platforms w/the names of the ships on it where they had been. Bizarre.

Note, more people were killed on 9/11/2001.
Also, they did not hit one aircraft carrier, which is probably a big factor in our winning the war.

Ya the first thing I thought when I saw these was how crisp and good the quality of the pics were.

Thats because cameras had high quality craftmanship and real glass lenses back then.
My father was a avid photographer in his younger years. He refused to buy a new camera because his old 35mm camera produced cleaner pics.

The Carriers were out on maneuvers during the attack, saw it on a History Channel special a few weeks ago.

My grandmother was there that day. She was a teenager then. She told me that her dad used the family station wagon to help transport people to hospitals. I think everybody there pitched in, whether or not they were in the military. Besides the normal holidays and birthdays I always call her and send her flowers on Dec. 7th.
I assume there aren't many survivors of that day left...........:(

blowing our country up one minute buying it up the next...ONLY IN AMERICA!

It was a brilliant move by Japan's Navy, a pre-emptive attack. (Hmmm...sounds like the President a few years back, don't it?) Caught folks with their guard down, and was a decisive victory at a crucial point in history.
Japan had to do it to because they were aware that Japan couldn't win a protracted war with America due to resources. (Japan has few, we's got lots). They took over the Dutch East Indies for oil and rubber, Manchuria for fuel, annexed the Korean penninsula for resources and labor, the Philippines... on and on. They just missed the US carrier force, which would have given them a 2-3 year cushion to reinforce their empire, possibly take Australia, and own the far East. Instead Mitchner, Spruance, and Nimitz put together a Naval battle plan that ran Japan out of their annexed territories in under 4 years (With the help of a lot of Marines and air crews!). ooh-rah!
It's a very impressive place, which tugs at your heartstrings when you're there... I think every American should see it (along with the Normandy cemetaries) if for no other reason than to see what happens when events pull us together for a common cause. This is one of the reasons I always feel a true sense of honor to meet a WW II vet (or nurse) who still walks the Earth because they're fewer and further between every year.

Amen Riomouse. I buried a good friend a few years back that flew during the invasion at Normandy. He was pilot of a C47 and dropped the 82nd and 101st. Lost one hell of a good fellow that day.
Different time back then. Different people too.

You're right.....I was thinking those pics were taken with high quality equipment and good film, probably by a government intelligence officer or professional media photographer.
Nothing like crisp, sharp B&W photos......
