The crack sucks, but it's the original engine in a 1989 boat so it's done it's duty and doesn't owe any appoligies to anyone. A compression check at the end of the season identified an issue and tearing it down this afternoon revealed the root cause. Funny thing is the engine started and idled perfectly and the boat ran in the low 60's on GPS on my last trip to the lake this year. If I hadn't tested and saw the 90psi cylinder I would have never suspected a thing!
The engine is a 330hp 454 so unless I re-do everything a really good set of heads won't help much. So, I'll likely but another peanut port head back on and call it good. Then hopefully this time next year my budget will allow me to build up something in the 500-600hp range.

I have tons of peanut port heads.
You can have one if you let us do the freshen up on the pair.
When we give bad news to people about their stuff a lot of times they say "it was running fine when I tore it down" It is all I can do to keep from asking them what the heck did you tear it down for then. LOL

Ok for all you engine Guru’s what most likely happened here?
• Was there a flaw in the casting
• Does it have anything to do with the valve seat installation
• Is this common with these engines
Just curious, the crack isn’t where I thought it would be, I expected it between the valves when ECeptor told me about it.
