Our lakes all do that every spring too. The ice thaws around the edge creating a huge ice island. The island shrinks over a period of about 10 days before it breaks up and dissolves.
If there are a couple of really windy days, the ice island can really carve up the shoreline pretty good. Nothing like that but it has a lot of power even against large quantities of reinforced concrete and 24" wooden poles.
