View Full Version : Need V-Drive Semi-V Bottom Advice

Though I'm not new to V-drives, the couple I've owned in the past were both flatbottoms. I enjoyed their acceleration and speed, BUT never the bone and kidney jarring ride in anything but glass. I've come across a couple semi-v bottom/v-drive vintage boats in the last few weeks and wanted to get some advice as to their ability. What top speeds can be realized in comparison to their flatbottom counterparts using "same" horsepower figures? How stable are these hulls at speed? Anyone presently own one that isn't a mini-daycrusier type? Thanks in advance.. No comparison to a Flat or a runner bottom..Can you be a little more specific? I would like to be able to run in the upper 80's to possibly the lower 90's????

I would like to be able to run in the upper 80's to possibly the lower 90's????Basically you're talking about a GN style hull, like a Rayson or similar I think. While they may not be "as fast" as a flat, and definatley not as fast as a runner bottom, they are still fast, and you'd have no problem achieving the speed range you're talking about with decent power. Again many variables to consider and it does depend on the hull. The above is just a general statement. :)

This is my 1985 TOI.(Not a flat bottom) I think it is a splash of an old Canyon mold, but I don't know. The hull is intended for a jet, but this one has been modified with a flat "pad" in the center if you will. It is a 12deg dead rise with a flat pad. It has 4 strakes and 2" outer chines. The thing rides awesome. I don't have any speed numbers yet, just trying to keep a motor together! http://www.havasubarney.com/iB_html/uploads/post-5-54724-mvc_001s.jpg

lakes , I run a 19 spectra with a jet [deadrise is 16 I think] with similar deadrise on the boat you posted. It handles the rough quite well. There's a 19 spectra v-drive on www.spectramarine.com (http://www.spectramarine.com) owners boats section. It was owned by vic edelbrock and they claimed 100+ mph. BTW the jet runs 72 on GPS [ca 500HP], so 100 is not way out of the line with serious power and v-drive.

I wanted to thank everyone that posted some feedback/advice.... I'm still trying to negotiate a deal on this boat, and also have a Nordic semi-v bottom in the dealing?.... Hopefully I'll be able to pull one off without going broke!

We looked at a 19ft Nordic semi-v V-drive about 3 years ago. My wife took a ride in it at the V-drive regatta and she really liked it. She was comparing it to a buddies Lavey flat bottom. She said it had the speed and was much smoother. We now have a 21ft cruiser. wink

That looks like a 73 Nordic I had with a 12deg
V-drive,took a fair amount of rough water and ran
90-95 with a low comp.468 heavy so not a great hole shot, hull was built for ski racing it handled
like it was on rails. The bottom looked like there
was a full pad shaped like sno-board? from about
5-6ft.back of the bow all the way to the plates aprox. 8" wide also had 2 or 3 strakes per side.

Hostile,
The bottom does have a shallower v to it compared to the main bottom. Not counting the center there are 2 strakes plus hell of a chine.

You can see in the floor on the passanger side where there had at one time had a seat next to the dash.
Can't tell from the v-drive case what degree it is.
Don't have a motor that small to put in it wink

e-Ticket, did you just recently purchase that Nordic? Does/did it have a Pontiac engine in it? The reason I asked, is because I found one in the Boat Trader and called on it, but before the guy could email me pics, he had sold it. A week later, the new owner called and offered to sell it to me, but never emailed me pics. Ivan

Skeeter, don't you think the top of that boat is the same as mine?

lakesmodified,
I just saw the boat on Wed and put deposit on it and picked it up on Sat. I found in it the boat trader. Don't know how long it had been in there.
It is going to be quite a bit of work. The dash is going to have to be replaced.

The metal on the dash is not just for cosmetics.

That looks like my 73,same basic hull,I would
almost bet the v-drive is a 12 deg. The deck is
the same as Dan's flat.

Hostile,
Is this boat worth rebuilding?

That question begs for the standard answer"any
V-drive is worth rebuilding" The big question is
is will it cost too much the photos make it look
like the hull is solid, after a resto the Nordic
has a lot to offer flat looks with a V bottom ride. The one I had seemed to love the rough stuff, and worked good as a ski boat so it was a
lot of fun.
