I have a chance to buy a 427 BBC. The block is bored .030 over. It has a sleeve in one cylinder. The block was a crate motor from Summitt or some type of a catalog type deal.
Im just wondering about the sleeve. Has anyone run one in a boat?
This may not matter but, if the engine was real hot and then cold water was to come in. Could it be possible for the sleeve to move? Just a thought I had.

Dan, sleeves nowadays stay put. If it's a good deal, buy it. I personally would treat a sleeved engine no different than I would a non-sleeved engine.
Just my .02

I was just wondering. Its a good deal. I just don't want to find out later that a sleeve is a bad deal.

I`ve had an engine with a sleeve and you couldn`t tell any difference , and yes the sleeve is put in so it will not move, run the hell out of it. RCM

my friend,,the original o.g. bung..a.k.a. sui-cy-cole has three motors over there at his shop with sleeves in all 8 cylinders...there aftermarket blocks!!!he can change sleeves in matter of minutes for diff. bore sizes...so to answer ya dan...one sleeve or 8 its all good,,they probably have more "good' meat in them than a stock bore...so get the motor and have a blast!

I was told that if an engine is sleeved,it should be done to all 8 cylinders. The reasoning was that the block distorts during the sleeving process.

After a sleeve is put in the cylinders next door tend to distort.Boring the block after the process eliminates this problem. The sleeve should be left on a ledge with green loctite applied then the block decked.I have installed hundreds of sleeves and never had one let go.I have even put some in where there was no support around and had no problems....drive the holy dog out of it...

I've owned my boat since the summer of 1986 with it's sleeved 454. One cylinder. I've never had a problem with it. Now, I trashed the engine in 1993 due to running lean, but the block was still fine and I rebuilt it again after that and I've never had any sleeve problems.
