I am leaning towards a Honda Civic or Accord. It would be nice to buy an American car but nothing really impresses me American wise.
Suggestions?

Honda fit, or the Civic for cheap.
The Accord for style.
Ya take them outta the box, drive them for 10 years, sell them for a good $$ and get another.

....plenty of inside space for cargo and/or people. I like mine.
I have the Turbo II motor and a manual 5 speed, I still get good mileage. The aspirated motor is a dog in my opinion, but the turbo I probably gets good mileage too.
If you are a GM only guy, the HHR is probably the same platform although I have never seen the inside of one.

Civic! Can't beat a Honda in the long run. Our DelSol is 11 years old w/ nearly 200K on it. it could use paint, but other than normal fluids, filters, brakes, and tires, it just recently had to have a water pump replaced. Other than that, it runs a good as the day we brought it home from the dealer. Still getting low-mid 30mpg and will run to the river @ triple digits if asked to.

Toyota Camry.
The Camry has got better styling then any of the Sedans out there for it's price. You can get fully loaded Camry with Nav., Leather, Heated Seats, V6, Sunroof, and etc. for under 30K.
If you want a NICE, NICE ride without breaking the bank to much you might consider looking at the Acura TL or the Acura TSX.
My next commuter is going to be an Acura TL.

Focus hatch back with a stick... you can get them for under 9k brand new with AC. They really do have alot of pep for what they are.
The car that shocked me on how much power it had was the escort ZX2 with a stick.
That being said I have not been in any of the newer GM "econ cars", but I have been in the honda and the toyota... and for what they are asking for them... you can get way more from some one else.

Hands down a 4cyl Ford Fusion. IMHO they one of the best looking, pretty spunky and beat out Honda and Toyota in Autotrend and Car and Driver test.
My mom needs a cheap daily driver so we have been looking. We drove the Civic, Corrola, and Fusion. It wasn't even a coparison. The Civic felt like it was made out of a tin can. The Corrola is a good car but god awful looking. Niether the Corrola or the Civic felt like a big car inside. The Fusion actually felt like a higher end, bigger car.
Plus, you can race it in NASCAR on the weekends...
Good Luck.

My girl has a toyota Corolla...The S which is what she has actually looks pretty cool, though the other versions i am not fond of, i like the civic too...also i think the car version of the scion is nice, though i am not too sure if anything short of a hybrid can beat the corolla's milage. She get around 35 in the city and 40 is her best....Depends on if you want somehting like an accord or a civic...civic and corolla or the accord and camry...haven't heard much about the fusion though had some freinds with chevy small car and they weren't happy with them.

Both of these cars are good for the job they were designed for. I went with the Toyota Corolla for two reasons. First, Toyota was much more willing to deal on the car. I paid 13,000 OTD for mine. It is a decent little car to bang miles on and not have to worry about. Iam getting 34 to 38 MPG depending on traffic and my foot. The other reason I went with the Toyota is you do not see anyone trying to do things with it. This lowers my chance of having the damn thing stolen. Due to Civic's popularity with kids customizing them, they are a very popular car to steal. And Honda's are the easiest car to steal hands down. I keep the Toyota a lil dirty and all i've done to it is tint the windows, so people who want to steal cars just walk right by (KNOCK ON WOOD)....

What about the Hyundai Sonata. It looks just like the accord, has a great safety rating and you can get a v-6 for about the same price as a Honda 4 cyl.
I have had Hondas and know they are super reliable, anybody have experience with Hyundai.

Or perhaps even an economy car like their Elantra.
I also like the Fusion real well. Those cars are very comfortable and have a lot of class. The four in our car pool are usually in for repairs so I don't drive them too often. The car pool administrator told me there have been times when all four are in the shop at once for mechanical failures. I've never had a Fusion break down on me, though.

I just got an Ion the first week of Jan. I have 3700 miles on it and I am getting 30 mpg consistantly... i have two mountain passes I have to drive through so I needed a little more engine then some..... and I drive at 80 mph consistantly..... would get better mpg if slower and no mountains to climb.... this is the last year of the ion.... then they will have an Opel rebadge that will cost more.... I only paid 12600 otd is has a 2.2 4 cyl, with man trans... I climb the hill at 60 to 70 in 4th gear, and I can pass in third but the motor is wound pretty high... good luck in your econo search...

Thanks and keep it coming folks. I am going to check out the Civic and the Corolla. Maybe I will up it to the Accord but probably not. I was all set to check out the Fusion but am a little scared of that one now.
Has to be an economy car with lots of reliability. That is my main criteria. I want to be able to do very little maintenance on it and will mainly be driving it around OC/RIV CO and out to the river along the 40. My truck will be kept at the lake house.
I have been driving nothing but big trucks for many years and will probably get claustrophobiac in the little car....lol

I had 2 different GEO Metro's. First one went 60K trouble free miles until it got hit. It was parked with out me in it thankfully.
Second one went 85K with only one set of tires (those 19.00 tires fit those cars).
Hey, at the time they were under 8K brand new and I got 50mpg out of the first and just a lil better out of the second one.
I ended up moving close to work so I sold the second one to my friends kid for 800 bucks.
The down side is when you push in the cig lighter the car slows down. lol
They did what they were for. But now that I'm older I'd give up some milage for something comfy like a Camery.

I think you will hate the size of the corolla/Civic after driving a truck for so may years. To get over 35-40 MPG your gonna have to crap your self into a tin can.

The XB is very big inside, been in a couple when my cousin was looking into getting one for a commuter. The car is not really meant for the highway though (which is fine in CA) and the best you will get is about 35mpg. At about 80mph you are at 4k rpms in the XB and is in the noisy side, not very well insulated.

I hate the wing so that would have to go yesterday;)
A couple years back we owned the ultimate crappy pocket rocket. Our (Girlfriends) SRT-4 surprised alot of mustang/S2000 and 350Z owners. Sad part was the tank was so small that you were luck to go 200 miles before you had to re-fuel.

I didn't mean it like that...I don't like being in a small car at 80 mph on the freeway. The wind blows and your a lane over...not to mention you get rear ended in bumper to bumper by a lifted diesel and your a corpse.

we asked the same question about 18 months ago when the guys prices were high and rising. The Tahoe just was not an economical solution for daily commuting to and fro (LOL) work.
We looked at the PT CRUISER and the Mini Cooper.. but they get horrible gas mileage like 16-17 MPG.
I liked the Accords/Civics alot but we were looking to save a few dollars.
So we ended up with the Scion Xb.. it was new then, great gas mileage 25-33 MPG. and it is roomy.
BUT after owning it for awhile the novelty wears off and it is funny looking. if we had to do it again we would probably end up w/ the Civic.

Low fuel costs.....This is subjective. Dependant on your income.
Low insurance costs...Is there really a difference of price in this catagory?

The american cars out now are junk in my eyes.
I have a Subaru and it will get 26 mpg when I want it to, its fun to drive, I can take it anywhere, it holds its resale better than most of the other imports, comfy on long trips, cool boxer rumble and it feels as tight as my friend's BMW 3 Series, oh, and its as fast as a Mustang GT from 0-60 out of the box. Great aftermarket too, my wagon with exhaust and Cobb Access port computer put it up to 285 HP and 0-60 a tick under 5 seconds.

Cool little cars.:)
I built up my little SRT4 to make 400 reliable hp, run in the 12s and smoke most V8s plus I still got 25mpg or more!!!:D
The problem is finding one. When I bought mine, it was one of the last remaining on the lots anywhere on the west coast. Unfortunately, most of the used ones are owned by kids and beat to shit. Mine was one of the cleanest around. They do get beat on pretty bad.
Man, I miss that little car. :(

Low maintenance costs...Most cars have the same maintenance costs. I suppose you mean something reliable.
Low fuel costs.....This is subjective. Dependant on your income.
Low insurance costs...Is there really a difference of price in this catagory?
Reasonably priced....refer to low fuel costs question above.
WTF! If you don't know what an economy car is I can't help you. Reading all between the lines...and shit.
Seems everybody else on here knows what an economy car is.

The HHR sits on a Cobalt platform. Both of which are nice cars.
I figured it would be close to a PT platform.
A friend of mine has the Cobalt SS it runs pretty good too. Although it won't outrun the PT.

you could always buy my Fiat... HD discount $1800 cash gets about 25 mpg... 73 no smog shit, its fun to drive and comes with a truck load full of parts...Sad part is its one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned... I've put like 10k miles on it and have not touched anything under the hood. I've never had a car that did not have something needing to be done every 10k miles.

The spoliler on the sedan is much smaller than the one on the coupe. I don't like the one on the coupe either. Driving an econo car is new to me. In the last 10 years or so, I have had a Vette roadster, a Z28, an M3, 2 Lightnings, a Saleen S281 SC Speedster, a SC 03 SVT Cobra and an SS Trailblazer, The TBSS is for sale now. The SI isn't as fast as an EVO, WRX-STI or an SRT4 but gets 34 on the highway and it handles amazing.

for the price the civic is a good deal...but if you want to look at something decent from a americian maker check out the pontiac g6....we rented on about 3 weeks ago and loved it lots of getty up and go and dam good on gas...we filled up in santa clara ($35) and made it home in palmdale with a little to spare...the trip included a stop at tahoe joes in bakersfield for dinner.....car ran great but is hard to bet the hondas and toyota's of the world

Ha Ha, Like a ford with a Yamaha engine?
Try finding one of those still running...
We really liked the 2 Door Civic, but couldn't get the package we wanted (basically an SI with an auto trans). I like the Scion TC, but it only has a 4 speed tranny, so we went with the 2 dr Accord. We get 30-35MPG avg the whole way to the river, and has more space than the TC or the Civic.
I still like the TC though, and the price can't be beat.

I bought a Scion xB in 04 as a commuter...it now has 40k on it.. but I gots a company car now so it's parked. It gets a REAL 32 MPG C/H averaged, not the inflated numbers on the stickers most cars show. When I moved, I was able to load it with 17 boxes (stater bros apple box size) of stuff. Came w/Air, power windows/doors, auto, CD player for 16k.
It looks like an ice chest, but the cost of feeding it (25 a week) over the super duty (120 a week) paid for the car payment and made the jokes and snickers of friends, the wife, and co-workers easier to take.

I'd love the G6 except they all have auto's
Hyundai Sonata is OK - drove smooth - Wife had one for 4 years, but I sold it when the tranny started to act funny at 90k; it takes a special Hyundai fluid that cost $10 a quart and was supposed to be changed every 30K...but they only came up with that maint schedule after the trannies started showing up before the 100K warranty was up.
I toured the factory a while back, I wasn't too impressed with the quality control. 90% of everything was done by robots, and the test drives are only done at under 40 mph...I guess the warranty with take care of the the issues that the QC testers didn't catch...also wifey's had a French built bosch alt...went out 3 times.
I like the Sub Forrester - has a little bit of room and available turbo motor.
I also like any Toyota that had an "A" series four banger...Mr2, corolla, geo prizm, geo storm. Overbuilt motors that are super cheap to replace with a supercharged version.

I had a Hyundai Elantra, paid around $13 ish. It got 30mpg and was setup nicely with leather power windows, locks, steering, etc. cd player. I drive a Hyundai Accent, with power windows, locks, mirrors, cd player. It gets between 33 and 37 mpg depending on how I drive. Paid about $8,500 brand new. 50,000 trouble free miles to date. Oil changes only so far. Hyundai has come a long way since the 80's. It's no Honda, but it's nice enough to run for 5 years and throw away.
