I've got my eyes open for a good deal on a used HD truck or SUV. I have found quite a few 6.0 Ford PS diesel trucks and Excursions. I thought that I read somewhere that the 6.0 is a POS. What are the pros and cons of the 7.3 vs the 6.0?
Thanks

IMO do not buy a 6.0. The 7.3 is the best diesel that ford has ever put in their trucks. Too many people have done everything from blow head gaskets to turbos.

yea 6.0 has it's fair share of issues ,but it is still a very strong runnin motor . remember that the last year a 7.3 was built was mid 03 thats gettin old .my 05 has 25k (yes i have blown headgaskets but that probably was self inflicted) . get yourself a newer one and i'm sure you'll be alot happier! there are quite a few out there with 6.o problems, but on the flip side I know of plenty that have had none.

Why do ya think there's so many 6.0's around... a friend of mine is a Ford tech, even he says "stay away", really.
(edit)I think you would have a better chance of a more trouble free engine if you at least looked at the later 6.0s

My06, 6.0 is turnkey 10k miles no probs at all. I checked into it and felt most issues were 04,and 05. GM diesels have problems also. But if you look at all the Fords sold compaired to people screaming about problems it's still low. Of course most of the guys who complained from what i have seen did plenty of mods to ruin the way the engine was designed to run and voided the Warr. I say buy one it still has a 5yr 100k warr.

05 250 HD 6.0 runs like a clock. Have never had a problem. Great truck.

Most of the issues were with the 03 6.0 (First yr) They had some issues they resolved and it hasnt been as much of an issue as prior.
I'm personally rolling the dice on the 6.4 but oh well, cant be any worse than my GM fiasco. lol

I wanted a late model diesel Excursion and was worried about the 6.0 as well. After doing some research, I decided that all the 6.0 issues were solveable and went ahead with the deal. It's a great running motor and the tranny works extremely well especially with an XCal II tuner in place (mine's from Elite Diesel). The most common problems with the earlier models are stuck VGT vanes in the turbo, EGR cooler failure, and rear main oil leaks, all covered under warranty to 100k and usually ok once updated with the latest parts. Yes they can stretch head bolts and blow head gaskets if you pump them up too much but the fix is straightforward - aftermarket studs and new gaskets and you're set for huge power levels. Yes the EGR causes coolant puking problems and stuck EGR valves - again easy fix, EGR block plate ($10) installed in the passenger side turbo up pipe and XCal II reflash to kill the EGR control. Yes the crappy downpipe and cat cause high EGTs - very easy to replace and not expensive. With a few simple mods they can make more than enough power and run great. If you like the late model Ford trucks or EX I wouldn't let the 6.0 scare you off.

A friend of mine has a 6.0 dually, he's had a lot of problems. I guess its a hit or miss deal. I'd try to find one still under warranty. Personally if I was getting a used clanker it would be Cummins powered.

Thanks for the replies. I have never owned a Ford vehicle so I am a little leery and don't know much about them. I have been browsing the Trader etc and there seems to be tons of Fords in there for what seem like pretty good deals. I am open to any brand for the right price and as long as it is a reliable rig. Just doing some research at this point unless a smokin' deal jumps out.

55% of all 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks on the road are Fords. 03 and 04 had some issues no dought. Even Ford Motor Co. will admit to that. But since then the problems have been solved.

30,000 on my 05 dually without any problems. I tow a 40ft Weekend Warrior with my boat inside so you know thats quite a bit of weight and it pulls it just fine and I haven't touched it (hop up kits). I truley believe alot of the problems are owner related (abuse) and then they bash the vehicle rather then themselves. There's good and bad with all brands, but the Ford is by far the nicest looking truck out there :jawdrop: :)

Didn't want to start a brand-war:) . I am actually quite a Dodge fan and had a 2003 Cummins 4x4 QC. Unfortunately a guy in a 3/4 chevy took it out and we got the Hemi Durango. Both have been great trucks.
Because I am trying to keep the price down, I am looking at the 2003/2004 which sounds like a bad time for the 6.0. So if I find one that is a good deal I'll be sure it is under warranty.
Thanks again for the help.

That was my first choice but they are hard to find used and even harder to find for a decent price. I never was really looking at the Fords until I saw how many were available. But I guess that is a bad sign:)

Ya, I know. The 2003 MY is just about in my price range for a diesel or I could get newer and get a v-10 which I am not opposed to either. From what I have read the early 2003 Fords are 7.3 and late are 6.0.

i've had a dodge/cummins sence 95 and have 345,000 miles. 1 tranny rebuild, 1 injector pump and 1 lift pump, a few battries and tires, lots of oil and filter changes. i just might get another dodge in couple of years

I had an '03 6.0 Ex that I swear was the first one out of the factory....total POS.
Bought a late '04 and just turned over 50K.....never been in the shop.
The later build engines are OK IMO. I have three 6.0 F350s at work that have been great.

I've been kicking around an F250 4x4 as there are some good deals on '07s around here. What do they really get for fuel economy is stock form driving 70% highway and 30% city? Will they really get 18? If I drive it 2000 miles at 80MPH interstate with just me in it will it get better than 18?
I have an '07 Tahoe that is averaging 14.5 in this cold weather but drove it to Houston last fall and got an average of 18.2 but would really like a pickup. Fuel economy does matter as i drive 40-45,000 miles per year and trade yearly, the company pays for it. I won't drive a sedan and tow only loads under 2500lbs but haul lots of crap to the boat every Friday.
I'm not really afraid of the 6.0 at this point since it has been out for a long time and I will not modify it. Just don't want to end up with a 13 mpg pig.

My Ex has a 3.55 posi (2WD), I get 15.5 in town, 18 highway. Not even trying to get good mileage, either.
If you're an azzhole in a big SUV you might as well drive like everyone expects you to....:D

Go back to the Cummins, To many problems with the 03-04 6.0s.
I agree my 2004 F250 got lemon lawed and before I bought my dodge i looked at ford and 62 service bulletins still open scared me away. 24k miles on the dodge and running like a champ....

I'd take a 7.3 over a 6.0 anyday. However, if you're going to buy a 6.0, make sure that it isn't a 03 - 04. Also, these motors LOVE to be worked. Work it hard (in STOCK tuning), and it'll last forever. Use it as a soccer mom mobile that doesn't tow or haul, and it'll blow up on you. I took a 800 mile trip in a 2005 F-250 Lariat Crew Cab short bed 4x4 6.0, towing a 24' ski boat for half of it. We got high 13's running 75 MPH over hilly 2 lang highway. Not going easy on it either. We saw 18 MPG on the way back, again, NOT going easy on it.

I'm real happy with my 01 cummins. Manifold heater solenoid got stuck after warranty. Dodge fixed it no charge. 90K miles
Best truck I have ever owned.
Funny thing is I was going to buy a ford, but the dealer ship killed the battery's in 2 trucks trying to get them to start when I was test driving. It was a little chilly out. That & the truck I drove rattled real bad on the freeway.
BTW- Billy, I know a few guys who babied there fords before returning them on lemon laws. Think the truck may have something to do with it there chief.

Hard to say. All I know is it isn't a gas engine and requires a little more attention. Like anything mechanical your bound to get a lemon.
