We were at Best Buy the other night getting the wife a new laptop and I cruised over to the DVD section and started looking at the Blue Ray DVDs.
Boy, they are expensive. Are they really that much better? There were DVD's that I paid 9 bucks for that were 34.95:eek:
I have a good TV; would it be worth the price?

It's the difference between the quality of regular tv and HDTV, right? You have to have a Blue Ray DVD player ($1000) and High Def TV to play those DVD, ya know...

I'm going to continue to enjoy red ray for a while longer but the storage density of blue ray technology is plenty impressive.

Yeah, I was wondering if it is really worth the price. The damn DVDs are crazy expensive.
You can get PS3s for 600 now and they are Blue Ray.

I have both PS3 (bluray) and a HD-DVD player. I think the picture quality is better on HD-DVD even though the movie selection (well, quality wise) might lean torwards BR.
It is quite a difference on my TV but I think really you will want to have a 1080P set to really get the most of it.
HD-DVD are a little less money also, usually around 19-21 online. (amazon etc etc)

Blue Ray/HD-DVD debate is like the Betamax/VHS fight of the 70's and 80's.
Which way will it go? I won't buy until it becomes a little more clear.

Is your TV HDMI capable?
We have the PS3 and they told us the blue ray is best with the HDMI capable TV and the special HDMI cable.
Damfino,, that's what the pro told us.

Mine is HDMI, actually both my Tosh HDDVD and my PS3 are both hooked up via HDMI.
monoprice.com is a good place to get cables, and not play the inflated prices at bestbuy and CC.

God, I don't know. I know it is a good set. It is a 50" Fujitsu Plasma. It is about 6 months old (so it is probably out of date :D )

The blueray player plays up to 1080P, If your tv can't handle that, it will play at your tv's highest rate. If you don't have a tv that plays 1080P (1080I is standard) then don't buy the player. I have a ps3 and use the HDMI cable and get a beautiful picture at 1080I. So I use it as my HD player as well. I took it to my parents who own a sony 60 inch that was 1080P and the pic was THE BEST I've ever seen. I mean it is a big difference from 1080i to 1080P. However, I don't see myself upgrading to a tv like that. The ps3 has a blueray player and it is about 499 to 599. If your going to buy a blueray, its the cheapest on the market without giving up quality.
As far as pic quality, the 720 wasn't a big difference to the 1080i. But the 1080P was SICK!!! I'm pretty sure that 480 is regular tv.

I'm with you Harry... I'm gonna wait it out until the battle is over. Blu Ray seems to have the marketing advantage but HD-DVD is looking like the better choice.

I talked to some of the techs at my work about which player was the best and which one they thought the market would lean towards. I was told to wait and see what the porn industry does, then the rest of the market would follow. The general feeling was HD-DVD will be the standard.

The porn industry has already started to go with hddvd. (I believe it was just one or two studios of them but still)
