Did you choose you're Place under the sun because of the....
Climate ?
Economy ?
Family, hers or yours ?
Several years ago we had decided to look in to pulling up roots and moving to Table Rock Mo. because of the milder climate and the beautiful lake. We have a good sized glass business that we could promote the top man to general manager. It can run without me, Ive been blessed with good people to work with. We figured we'd start up another glass business there in Mo. We would also have to pull the kids away from their friends, But we figured that if they were to meet their future mates in Mo. we could have our family closer as time passed and they had their own family's. We even had my parents talked in to moving down there if we did. We started working with a Realtor, the Chamber of Commerce, our suppliers, on and on.
The plan was derailed by my fathers health and her fathers health. We just couldn't turn our back on our responsibility's.
So... how did you get to living where you are and why? and how? and how long?
You're invited to give the details.

The only reason we are here is because it is where we've always been. We are literally in the house Jeff grew up in. I moved to this valley in '83 with my parents, and we just never left. We are looking to get out in the next 5 years, though. It's not the same place we grew up in. It used to be a rural farm and ranch area and now it's an area with a population of 500,000 - 600,000 people (Temecula, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Menifee). It sux. :(

hmm...how did I end up in central Illinois of all places?????!
moved here after college. Couldn't afford to live in Chicago, where I grew up, on a nonprofit salary, and didn't want to live with my parents. I had some friends who went to school down here and stayed for jobs. I was supposed to be here for a year...been here almost 8. Turneddown a job in Phoenix last year, thinking a relationship was going to turn out differently. Ended up buying a house, the whole real deal. But a year later, life looks like it will be taking yet another turn in the coming months. So central Illinois could be a thing of the past :D

Grew up in Dallas and joined the military. Military sent me to Vegas and I've had nothing but great opportunities after getting out of the Service. Been here since 1988. I would like to retire somewhere else.... mmmmm maybe Havasu.:D

Been in the Tacoma area for almost 12 years, moved here, and still here because that's where the Air Force says I need to be...
On the good side, I met my wife here, wouldn't trade that for anything

We were living in Northern Utah and I was working in Breckenridge Colorado building an Ice Arena in the middle of winter. The General Contractor I was working for pissed me off, as well as finally had enough with the snow so I asked the Mrs to start searching around for job leads.
She calls me up one day and asks me if I had ever heard of Page/ Lake Powell AZ. I had been vacationing here for years prior to meeting her and told her to send off a resume. The contractor was looking for a Project Superintendent. The company brought us down, showed us around and so we packed up and relocated.
Other opportunities have presented themselves and so now I travel all over building projects (currently building a Casino outside of Escondido) but we will never leave Page. At the rate we are going and with my job, I'll be in a position to retire from construction by age 50 and just screw around on Lake Powell, working out on the water.

moved to Fair Oaks so I could go to HS. Moved out went to school, Found a place to rent that was right across the street from where i lived when I was in HS. Was not looking to do that, but I need a place to live fast and this was the only one I looked at that was nice and "wroth the money". 6 months latter my mothers lung condtion got worse... she moved in. I've been wanting to leave CA for a couple of years now. I bought some land up in OR that I am going to build a house on... just can't talk my mom into coming up with me... So I'm stuck.

I grew up in western N.Y., joined th US Air Force to get away from the cold....got to live in TX., Calif., Spain and ended up here in Washington DC metro area, that was 20 years ago and I'm still here. I want to move to a warmer climate but can't talk the misses into going. So for now we'll remain here and see what happens.

I think the good Lord hated me and made my place to live Canada :D I make over a 100 grand a year, boating seasons suck cause you get like 4 months worth of fun :( I probably work like 345 days out of a year :( It is getting better though, we are starting a 11 days on and 3 off . I am also a 4th year Plasterer and thought of warmer climates to live, but I have lived through this shit so long, it's home now!
I would love to live in Havasu, see I love to boat till the water freezes over or the boats are broken :D , so 365 days on the water sure sounds good.........I wonder if I snuck in if they would let me stay :D ..........( . )( . )............
PS...I stay here cause my kids all live here also, you are nothing without your family  Marcy, Aleasha, Amanda and Jenna are my life, I don't care where I live cause I have them  Its not where you live, it's what you make out of it! I sure can make my neighbors mad in the winter with ear splitting truck stereos :jawdrop: So that is why I love pictures of your boating trips in the winter for me, it feels like I am there
I could be moving to your neighbor hood, just not right now!;)

Isn't that about minimum wage in USD? :D
I grew up in Hawthorne, CA. Had been coming to the River to boat and bike since the mid '60s. My Grandfather owned an Office Supply Company in Beverly Hills, and when driving through from his home in Sun City, AZ, decided to stop in Parker to see what we saw in it. He saw that Parker Office Supply was for sale, and in 1974 decided to buy it, and had my folks move out and run it.
I joined the Coast Guard and was sent out here '78-'81. In '87 I was considering getting out of the Guard, and the Under-Sheriff (who I used to work with on the River) offered me a job. The rest is History.

I live in Moreno Valley because my in-laws are close by and my wife has a 3 minute commute. Its not that bad here:rolleyes: At least we have good Mexican food.:D My in-laws are moving to Menifee so I guess a move is in my future. I wont move until I can rent this house for the note. I figure 3 to 5 years from now. I would like to live anywhere between Temecula and Menifee. I also wouldn't mind a move to the La Quinta area.

Sometimes I share the same view, Kim.
With a heated garage and a remote start, you don't have to spend much time in the cold if you don't wish.
There are beautiful winter days, though. You know what I'm talking about; sun shining, clear blue sky, -20C, crisp, and perfectly still. When you're out of the city on one of those days, it can be as pleasant as any summer day. I don't think it's something that can be understood, until someone has experienced it.

I wish my hotel had heated garage. Take up 20-30 minutes to get the car drivable.
The clear days with no wind were very special. The best part off the trip was the people. Very different folks from SoCal extremely open and friendly.
Funny thing was they know more about the US then I did. Embarassing at times.

Don't mention the days when you're on the highway and the heater doesn't have enough capacity to keep the windows clear and your feet warm at the same time. As soon as you divert the heat down, the windshield goes opaque. Days like that, you need cruise control because there's no way you could hold a frozen foot in the right position for hours on end. It would hurt too much.

I've always been in the Waco area... within an hour and a half from Austin, Dallas, and Ft Worth... 5 minutes from Lake Waco, 30 minutes from Lake Belton and Lake Whitney... an hour and a half from Lake Travis.
We have a pretty decent nightlife, especially with the Baylor chicks running around... we get a lot of the big city action such as concerts, and most of what the bigger cities have to offer without all the big city headaches and traffic jams. Housing is a lot more affordable than the larger cities. Winters are mild and only a couple months a year are hotter than what I like. We're only a few hours from the coast and the Mexico border towns, which used to be fun, although I don't care much to be venturing back into Mexico anytime soon. It's not too big and it's not too small of a city... just about perfect for me...

I am from the Provo Utah area where most people that live there didn't choose it, they simply never chose to leave. Loved the snow as a kid and skiied as often as possible. 7 knee surgeries later, I hated the snow because I couldn't ski. Came to the river more often after that.
After about 9 years of every other weekend to the river,
I found myself always saying how fun it would be when we
retired to move to Havasu. Had a good job at State Farm
and hated the weather. After a particularly cold winter,
we sold the house and moved to Havasu. I'd do it again
in a heartbeat. Love it here.

Grew up in Milwaukee and knew nothing but short summers and cold winters. Played in, plowed and sholved the white stuff. Joined the Navy in 83 and ended up in San Diego for 4 years. Once I got a taste of the warm stuff, Wisconsin was just a nice place to visit. A 2 years stint in King City, moved just outside of Richmond VA for 9 years, moved to McAllen TX down on the border for 2 years and now in paradise, Havasu.

Grew up as a kid in So Cal and moved to Mammoth when I was 22 I lived between Mammoth and Bishop for about 9 years. Got Married and started a Auto Body Shop and then got tired of the Business and wanted a house with some land for horses and Moved to Gardnerville, Nv.
Still here after 18 years I love the area. I hate the long winters. Havasu is looking better all the time.

"Ain't no place quite like this place, so this must be The Place"
Moved around NC all my life except for a detour to Wichita KS for 3 yrs that turned into 7 yrs, thanks to Corporate America. Of course being an airplane type as well as a boater, it was all good. But...I started lobbying to get back to NC, at corporate expense, of course, and it worked! Bought the family place at Lake Norman from mom, built the house, and now dare my wife to talk me into any sort of move again. Unless, of course, there's an insane amount of money on the table....

Born in Long Beach, graduated from Jordan H.S. in 1976.
Family lived in this area, my Godfather was involved in the SR-71 program at Beale AFB. I came north 5 days after graduation to go to college for Forestry,
because Godfather found the local com. college had a good forestry program.
One year into forestry A.S. program I figured out there wasn't any money in the bizz unless you got really, really, lucky, changed major to Criminal Justice.
LOVED this area, made great friends.
Parents moved north in '78.
I never thought I'd leave, nor even consider it. Ther is really no place I'd rather be if I didn't have all this stuff in my spine.
Now, I really need to consider it because I need a warmer, dryer climate.
But, like others, it isn't as easy to roll it up and go when one parent dies and the other doesn't want to move again, & you need to consider other family issues as well.

Born in Whittier, CA and lived in Diamond Bar. We moved to Portland, OR when I was young and grew up there. After high school I moved to Havasu, then Phoenix, and a couple of places in Tempe. Worked and went to school. Dropped out of school for a job in Vegas. Lived in 2 different places there and started my radio sales career. The station sold out so I took a job at a station in So Cal since I had family here and moved in with my cousin in Fontana. Then moved to Mentone and then Yucaipa where I am now. So I guess I ended up here because I wanted to be back in Cali and the job and family directed me back.
I have lived in 13 different houses/apartments total. I guess I moved a lot. :)

Born and raised in socal. Went to school at UNLV then Auburn. Moved back to Vegas and had a great time, but then when we started a family, it was Cali. Specifically, Huntington Beach and my neighborhood because of the schools. Also, my parents are close and they can help with the cost of daycare.
HB is expensive but nice. I dont mind paying so much for my house because we like living here. The freezing cold winters suck though. ;)

It sux. :(
Temecula= 93,000 pop
Murrieta= 92,000 pop
Lake Elsinore= 40,000 pop
Menifee= 20,000 pop
for a total of 240,000...a far cry from 500-600k people
Go to OC were santa ana and anaheim combine for 700,000 surrounded by several cities of 100,000 plus or LA with 2 million now thats crowded!
The Temecula Valley is still one of So Cals "less" crowded nice areas with all the amenities such as dining, entertainment and central to beaches, deserts and mountains. But your right the traffic is getting worse!!!

Your population numbers are only the cities - the unicorporated county around Murrieta, Baja Murrieta (Temecula) including wine country, Wildomar, French Valley, DeLuz, La Cresta and Menifee would account for quite a few more people, (not enough to make 500-600k, probably more like 350k-400k).

Born in 1981 lived in Huntington Harbour. 1987 we moved to Mission Viejo (Dad now admits that was the dumbest thing he's ever done, LOL) until my parents split in 1993 & dad moved us back to Huntington Beach. Graduated from Marina HS in '99 then it was off to San Diego State. Meanwhile dad got remarried an moved out to the "909". Finished college in Dec. '05 & couldnt find a job to save my life, w/ my bank account quickly drying up I moved into one of my grandparents rentals last march - so it was back to Huntington Beach. It's not where I thought I would be at, but I am thankful for their ability to help me.

Born in Denver, raised in Southwestern Colorado... Loved it for the first 25 years or so... snow skiing, snowmobiles, snowshoes... anyone see a patern. As I lost my taste for winter outdoor activities, I found myself going to see my brother in Tucson, or the other half of my family in Vegas more and more often. Finally, after a realationship went south (that was the final straw), I decided I needed a change, so I upped and moved to Tucson.

Got outta the Marines.
Wanted a new or newer home.
Walked into an old real estate office, which was no longer a real estate office but a new company called Countrywide.
A big boobed, beautiful 22 year old blond was sitting at a card table with a fold up chair and an adding machine.
She said "it's no longer a real estate office, but we can see how much you can qualify for and spend on a new home for yourself, and we can finance it for you".
She called the next day a told me I could buy up to $51.000 on the GI bill.
Zero down payment.
I had only about $70 to my name, but an ok job that paid a whopping $606 a month.
Big money at the time.
So, the newest homes at the right price were in Simi Valley.
Bought a nice 4 year old home for $48 K.
My mom told me I was crazy to have a $375 a month payment (including property taxes).
Glad I didn't listen to mom.

You're invited to give the details.
.
How about you? Why do you live where you do?

After returning from the Philipines as a 9 year old, My dad got stationed in Anchorage.
I lived there for 30 years. Went to work in the oilfield, just like Kimmie in Canada.
Same deal, -30 in Anchorage, -65 or colder in Prudhoe Bay (Work).
After 2 divorces and nothing really going on for me there I noticed my trips to Cali and points south were becoming more frequent and lasting longer.
Got layed off from the oilfield (again) and was living in my Moms basement in Anchorage in my late 30's with a 19 year old model and cokehead. (Gotta say, THAT was a fun year though!) 1999.
Woke up one day and had about 5 grand left. Got in my truck and drove to Cabo san Lucas from Alaska.. Sat on the beach for 2 months whatching the water and taking acid.
When I had just enough money left to make it home, I left.
Here is where it gets good.
While crossing the bridge over Shasta Lake on I5, I saw all the boats, looked good to me.
I continued home to Anchorage, sold a 63 falcon I had for 4 grand, put some money into truck repairs and left again. 2 weeks after I got there.
A week Later I pulled into Redding but there was no work. Drove to Sac and looked up an old girlfriend. She was married now, but they let me stay in their garage for a month. Got hired back in Alaska so I started flying back and forth every 2 weeks for work.
Rented a house in Redding right near the lake. (5 minutes) Bought a boat and became one of the people I saw from the bridge that day.
2 years I lived there alone. One day that same old girlfriend called and said she was bringing her girlfriend up to meet me. We met, went out in the boat and started dating that day.
Now it is 4 years later. We own a beatiful 4 acre lot with pool, shop and just everything you could want. We got married 3 years ago and just count our blessings every day. I work in Colorado now so I don't have to fly to work, I can drive AND got a directional drilling job so am clearing over 200K easy every year. Not bad for an 11th grade dropout!
Sorry I got longwinded, I just never expected it to turn out this way. When I pulled into Sac that day 6 years ago, I had $200.00, no job and no home. Just a truck and a sleeping bag and stuff.
Everytime I go under that bridge in one of our boats, I ALWAYS look up and see the people looking down from the cars and I smile! :D :D

Thats what I'm talking about. Great story. Congrats!
:)
Thanks. I have been pretty lucky overall. But I don't think my story is unique for my generation. Several of my Bro's I grew up with have somewhat similar storys. We just never really had our own roots being air force brats. In a way I think we are lucky that way, if not a little selfish. Family and relatives really don't influence our choices much. My best friend I grew up with in Alaska lives in Idaho now, that is where he ran out of gas 5 years ago. No kidding. He too makes the same money as I do now (same job) and can live anywhere and travel to work.
But it seems like we are really trying to establish our own roots and still wonder where we will end up. I mean, we are 45 and still don't know what we want to be when we grow up! It is liberating in a way.
I wonder if it would have been raining that day on the bridge, would I have still moved there? Who knows? :D
I'm glad it was sunny!!:)

Born and raised in SoCal, as were my parents. Grandfather came over from Germany in the early 1900's. Had opportunities to re-lo during my working years...just never did. Ya get settled, married and kids, and it's tougher to pick up roots and move.
After driving over 6,000 miles over the past month across this great country of ours, there's definitely some great places out there to choose from... IOWA was most impressive...

same here i, hated the cold
and the ALL the bases overseas, were:) 200 people total
real small
the military, teaches you how to deal with situations
and with moving so much
you begin to hate MOVING, every two years :(
especially as a kid
you lose all your friends:(
SOOO... now,i notice,
once you settel down you stay
i ALSO noticed now,
all THE friends i have, i've had since i was 16 (the age i move to the high desert)
and you know how the military is
if you as a kid, get in trouble
then your dad is in trouble...
so we were all innocent, goody goody kiddies lol
people can say
the high desert sucks... no green
but all my live, i had it, green, green, green, and rain and cold    and snow and flat land...
SOOO....
i love the desert
i love the mountains
the rocks
i love the heat
and i love havasu
the hotter, the better!
hubby got the biggest promotion offered, up north
i really freaked OUT:cry:   i couldnt stand the flat land, and green
if he took THE PROMOTION, we could be retired now...
but he saw me so upset
and he didnt take it...
i am sooo glad we didnt move
i would of went into a severe depression... NO LIE
some love the green, and hate the desert
but not me :D

At the rate we are going and with my job, I'll be in a position to retire from construction by age 50 and just screw around on Lake Powell, working out on the water.
lol
i think i fell in love with utah and powell
never knew powell, (the start)was the edge of AZ
we retire in 10 years
i started looking at page, to retire!
the beauty is unbelievable!
i know i want to be in AZ
thats for sure, and i want the water...
you guys will have to show us the town when we are up there!

Isn't the oilfield the shit ! Great story Tommy   ...........( . )( . ).......
Yes it is! I go to work in sweats or shorts, get to surf HB all day if I want, between surveys and slides at least.
Can live ANYWHERE in the world as long as I show up for my hitch. And make a grand a day. If only I knew how to manage it!!
As you well know, there is no explaining our jobs to people outside the business. No one ever believes it's a real job. My older nieghbors swear I'm a drug runner.
High dollar toys everywhere and when I'm home I am there for like 2 weeks at a time all day. They never see me work! Except yardwork or on boats and stuff.
PS- You know I am out of state working when I am on here every day. At home I rarely turn the damned thing on.

Was born in Fullerton, Ca. My family moved to Chino Hills when I was about three. Met Andy when I was 17 and as soon as I turned 18 we bought a condo in Chino Hills so we could stay close to work and family. His family lives in Diamond Bar and mine still in Chino Hills. Got pregnant with Kailey so we decided we needed something bigger and bought a house in Chino Hills so we could stay close to family and work once again. Went through the divorce and I have lived in 5 different places over the last 2 years. Ended up out in Corona because my boyfriend wanted to get out of Chino Hills. It is a little further from my parents and from work, but the house is a lot nicer than the house I had in Chino Hills. I miss my family though. I am a huge family person, so it's hard for me to not be 5 mins away.

Out Here?:)

I wish. I'm done with property. The only way I'd have land again is if it could stay natural and not need to be weeded, mowed or maintained.
