All my in-laws went to Venice. Wife's Mom, Dad, Grandmother, Grandfather, Uncles, Aunts, etc. Her Mom is credited with writing the Venice High Alma Mater in the '40s, but Dad actually wrote it and sent it to her from Japan (Army). Kathy's Mom plagerized it and submitted it as her own.
Her Grandfather, George Wolf, was the first lifeguard at the Venice and Santa Monica Plunge in the '20s, and along with George Freeth, was credited with starting the LA County Lifeguard Service. He was a lifeguard his whole life, until he went blind from the sun in the '60s. He lived in a trailer in Pacific Palisades until he died in 1986. The big funeral scene, with all the boats and lifeguards off shore at Santa Monica, featured in "Baywatch" was based on the funeral they gave him. There's a plaque dedicated to him out on the end of the breakwater at Balona Creek. (Marina Del Rey).

Boatcop,
You might be right about Mike. Mike's brother Stan and Sister Stephanie, I know for sure because I was there. We were always told that Mike Love graduated from Morningside as well. The names you mentioned don't sound familar. I still think it's cool to know that there are guys on here that came from that area and time. Jay Photoglou, the Chevy Guru, is the Son of one of my oldest friends brother, Mike Photogou. I go back with the Photoglou family to Inglewood in 1961. It really is a small world. Hope to meet you some day.

I remember them, but a little before my time. We cruised Hermosa Avenue.
I do remember my Dad making comments whenever we to A&W on Friday or Saturday night when I was a little kid. He'd say....
"Look at those idiots. They take a thousand dollar car, put a thousand dollars of junk on it, and make it worth $500 dollars."
(He grew up in Northern Michigan. Had no idea of the SOCAL car scene.)
I also learned to surf at D&W at around 6 years old. (1961) The old man wanted to try and do the lifestyle and learn to surf. He could never get the hang of it, but I guess I was a natural. After he got tired of swimming for the board all the time, I paddled out and "just did it". Although it was pretty easy for a 6 year old on a 12 foot hollow redwood surfboard. :D
Could you imagine going to D&W or the "pits" nowadays? I think they'd classify what would happen as "suicide".

You are too young to remebmer the old site of the school. We painted the old Brea gym before we played in 87. I lived right on the boarder on Puente and was buddies with a buch of Brea guys. The Whittier Quake hit the morning of the game. We played that night at La Habra, we won, one of my few HS football wins that is why I even mention it.

I remember the Whittier quake... I was getting ready to go to school at Macy Elementary in Whittier playing "Pole Position" on my Atari 2600... I remember that after the shaking stopped I was standing in the front doorway still holding the controller :D
I should have gone to Sonora (lived in the Heights) but my parents had me transferred to Brea and we ended up moving there soon after.

My Dad went there in 1958-1960. The name McDaniel doesnt sound familair but would need to drag out the old yearbooks.
Actually I stand corrected. He was the 2nd graduating class. The 1st graduating class graduated in Feb 1960 and he graduated in June 1960.
My dad was the first class that attended all 3 years 10, 11, 12. I also had an uncle Scott Mcdaniel and aunt Shawn Mcdaniel there at the same time as you.

My brother graduated from Washington in 62, his name is Bob Moreno. Freinds brother George Angiuli, others were Les Wade and Les Harris
By the time I started cruising Hawthorne, the Stand was closed. We ran from about Manchester through the A&W up a few blocks then back toward Manchester.

Backs up to Site Dr? Just up hill from the corner? I dont want to pin you down over the net and I might be way off. 22+ years ago. I don't think I ever actually knew the Pelloni's. Ran with a different crowd I guess. I agree this is a bit crazy.
To give you an idea I delivered the "Daily News Tribune" paper with my Schwinn beach cruiser all over up and down those hills six days a week for like $30 a month. You know the hills:mad: That should have been "unfair child labor" IMHO.
My first new car was an '86 Mustang GT bought just before we left that house (mom and I moved out and went separate ways in May of 86). So maybe we were neighbors?
The trouble I used to get into in the oil fields. Then there was the missile site..what was the name?
Brea...who would have thought:)
OC i think you are referring to the Nike Base????

We would hit the Bob's Big Boy on Van Nuys Bl, on occation. As you said, it wasn't difficult finding street races close to home. Dockweller to us was called the Pits. Those were fun times
