don;t know if all this is true...??
THiNGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELLPHONE COULD DO...
>
> There are a few things that can be done in times of
> grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be
> a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check
> out the things that you can do with it:
>
> FIRST
> Subject: Emergency
> The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If
> you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile
> network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the
> mobile will search any existing network to establish
> the emergency number for you, and interestingly this
> number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.
> Try it out.
>
> SECOND
> Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?
> Does your car have remote keyless entry?
> This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a
> cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the
> spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their
> cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone
> about a foot from your car door and have the person at
> your home press the unlock button, holding it near the
> mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves
> someone from having to drive your keys to you.
> Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles
> away, and if you can reach someone who has the other
> "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or
> the trunk).
> Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it
> unlocked our car over a cell phone!"
>
> THIRD
> Subject: Hidden Battery power
> Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate,
> press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with
> this reserve and the instrument will show a 50%
> increase in battery. This reserve will get charged
> when you charge your cell next time.
>
> AND FINALLY...
> FOURTH
> How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
> To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the
> following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #
> A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number
> is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it
> somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can
> phone your service provider and give them this code.
> They will then be able to block your handset so even
> if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be
> totally useless.
> You probably won't get your phone back, but at least
> you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it
> either. If everybody does this, there would be no
> point in people stealing mobile phones.

1. dial 911 in an emergency, unless you are in Europe.
2. the car door unlocking thing is total bull shit...they use RF waves, not sound.
3. the rest of these depend on the cell phone brand and cell phone company.

Yesterday I would have bet at least $20 dollars that Tom Brown would have chimed in a unique cell phone ability by now.

....and if you believe that I've got some Waterfront Property at Overton Beach for sale.....
...sorry, bad pun, but who buys into this $hit?
I've also heard that if you hit *, then #, then spell out "JACKASS" on your keypad and hit "send" you'll be tracked by Verizon and Sprint and get paid for every phone call....:jawdrop:

Some other things that I tried to get my cell to do........
1) Fishing lewer.........didnt work.
2) Street asphalt tester.......worked good, asphalt was harder than the phone.
3) Hider in "hide and go seek"......worked excellent, still cant find it.
4) Dash dressing (Armorall) tester......worked good, dash was slippery. (see #2 for follow up)
I think thats it.

My phone does all that stuff, also if you dial *8890 it will read barometric pressure and tell you the proper jet size to use in any carbureted engine.

The *xxxx# codes are in the format Motorola used on their older phones... but "extra battery power" sounds rather far-fetched.
For instance *73887# took you into programming mode on the Star-Tacs and T720/T710s.
The one about the keyless entry signal being transmitted through the cell phone was good for a chuckle, though :)

dude, that alarm thing is bull shit!
I heard if you push 579#, it will tell you how many times youve gone to the bathroom your whole life
and if you press 344# while eating ice cream and rubbing the phone on your wrist it will tell you how many hairs are on your head

Many phones do have a way to reduce battery consumption by about 50%, but it's different on every phone, in every country, and with every provider. And it also reduces your signal strength......
Yea, the one on the remote car door opener was good for a chuckle...:D
I have heard that if you put your girl friends phone on vibrate, and then have her stick it in her pants all day, then you call her every hour and she'll be thinking of you often..............:)

Depending on your cell phone and plan, you can use your cell phone as a wireless modem to get on the internet with your laptop. I can with my Treo (using Bluetooth) and my brother can with his Razr (he uses a cable) Both of us have data plans for internet access.

Now that *does* make sense. I would imagine it just drops the output power? That's how I squeeze the last juice out of my 2-meter HT battery...
