I can match that. My sister totaled her 63 ford falcon. My Dad said to me that's your car. The whole front end was smashed in. I said what did I do wrong. I bought a 62 falcon and made one of the two. It had a 260 V8. Yes that is correct a 260ci V8 with a three on the tree. Before I got it finished and gave it back to my sis. I bought me a 67 Impala SS. 396ci with 325 horsepower. I immediately increased the horsepower and caused myself a problem or two.

What is with you primadonas?
My first car was such that I could have stopped by an insurance adjuster's office at any time and had it totalled. I would use chrome polish to knock the orange glow from the bubbling paint around the rust holes. It's the vehicle that taught me how to pump the brake pedal quickly enough to actuate brakes with a master cylinder that was missing it's umbrella seals.

65 Malibu SS that I bought in 1985 for $900. It was a basket case with 195K miles and I restored it stock. I went to the prom in this car, drove home from my wedding in it (same girl), showed it, commuted it from IE to OC, and now several engine and trans combos later; it racks up 1/4 mile at a time. I still have all the original stuff stored (engine, trans, AC, etc.).

My first car to drive was a sixty (something??) Austin Healy Sprite. But it really belonged to my dad. The first car I bought was a 1967 Chrysler New Yorker. What a deal. I paid $600 for it and drove it for two years with no problems. Then while it was sitting in front of my house one morning someone sideswiped it. They actually stopped! Their insurance paid me $800. Then a while later, without doing any repair to it, I sold it for $500. So......Paid $600 Insurance <$800> Sold <$500> = Drove it for 2 1/2 years and made a $700 profit on a $600 investment! Best car I ever had :D

1970 El Camino. Unfortunately, the 307 with the Turbo 350.
She was a looker, though. Gold, black vinyl top, and matching hardtop for the bed. Added American Torq Thrusts with 60 series Polyglass tires (later Cragars with Goodrich TRs) Hi-Jackers all around, Hedman headers, duals with the Corvette mufflers. Strictly a cruiser, no racer...
The "audio" package was a Motorola 8 track on a slide mount and a pair of Pioneer 5.25's in the doors.
Wish I still had her. Screw "numbers matching", I would have put in a crate motor and lost the Turbo 350.

Yeah Jim, that old geared Merc surprised the hell out of everyone. Especially the grocery getter 16 and 17 second 265 and 283 Chevys......My 427 medium riser C&O hydroed 57 Ford Wagon only ran 12.50s on its best 3650 lbs day....Flatheads forever!!!
.........Sounds like the Merc would have an F/gasser at San Fernando.......15.30....real quick for flathead, was the mph around 90?.......the record for E/gas for a couple of years was 15.26..held by my neighbor.........so you were running as quick as the small c.i. OVH.gassers.......nice

No the Merc was just run that one night at the beach.(I really don't remember the speed) The Ford Wagon was at SF all the time.......Legal C gasser based on weight and cubes, but not competitive in class. The officals would put me in D gas just to protest a D gas cheaters weight, and mid 12s wasn't competitive there either. I always got in free though, so I just enjoyed what I had, uncorked it at 12:30, made a few passes, lost first round, corked it up at 3:30 and drove it home. Also drove it to work and the local drive ins. On the street that car was never beaten, the hydro was so quick across an intersection and street races were usually short, so it was over before it started. I did frequent Joe Rose's place there in Inglewood, R&W automotive with a chassis dyno. Motor put out outragious HP, but the car was so heavy......Still a blast on the street, and strip. Ran SF, Lions, Irwindale, El Dorado, (Vegas), Half Moon Bay, Carlsbad, Formosa....And a couple of others I can't recall the names of...Good old days.....Before smog checks and BS laws.......Maybe thats why I went to boats??...........MP

Very nice work!! Really cherry. So did you go with a reliable stocker 1600 or put a sleeper 2 liter in it?
At one point I was running an 1835 with baby Dellortos....'till it threw a rod and ruptured a fuel line.....which of course caught fire. Fortunately I got the fire out before the case started burning. Pops was an LA Co. Firefighter and made sure I had a halon extinguisher in it. He knew they like to burn.

I got pop's 54 Chevy Pickup. Fresh paint and chrome. 327 with a 350 TH tranny. Thing was nice, but too much for a 16 year old that just got his license and was working at Carl's Jr.
I was losing money just driving to work for $3.35/hour.

First car I owned was a 69 SS Camaro. Paid $900 for it in 1980, and had it running and drivable with a "fresh" primer job when I turned 16. Drove a 68 VW bus when it was'nt running.

Awesome car! A buddy and I took a trip down to Mexico in 2003 in his 69 Dart. It had the 6 cylinder and it ran great! The brakes gave out so we had to leave it on the side of the road in Mexico. When we were coming back a couple hours later the car was gone. We knew it would be. Man that was a great trip!

1st car was a '67 Mustang 289 fastback punched .30 over, painted metallic blue with a teardrop hood scoop and Cragar S/S. Paid $250 for it in '73 and it really screamed after replacing the 3rd member for $35 at the junk yard. Those were the days.

1970 Mach 1 Mustang. My dad loaned me the $1,000 to get this in 1984. It was dark green and bone stock when I got it.
Took all summer to pay dad back. Back then we raced on G street in Ontario (where the Mills mall is now) and Rockafeller
(back behind the Scandia park just north of Jurupa on the 15) in Ontario.

magnum wheels, ice cold a/c, 3 spoke wheel and my favorite... a 10 inch factory stall converter
turning the insides of a small block C6. Fun Car! I drove it work everyday 100 miles round trip back then.

1979 10th Anniversary Trans Am, it was Midnight Blue, 400 w/ the 4 speed, LS6, this car was awesome. I blew the 400 after a year of "doughnuts" in the school parking lot, bought a 1969 427 tri-power from a guy that was rebuilding his corvette...when I put that puppy into my T/A, it was the hottest car in school....I beat the shit out of the car and eventually sold it to buy something "new and reliable"....someday I will buy one again, except they are about $25,000 now for a nice one compared to the $2,500 that I spent.

Mine was a 1972 Baja. I turned 16 in 86 but my dad gave it to me in 84 so I had time to press it out. 1835 w/ a single Webber 42 and dont forget the stinger. Check out the Jackman rims and lights, pretty sweet huh? Lets not forget the super cool sunroof that had the standard leak option. It had a JVC stereo, Pyramid EQ and Sparkamatic 6x9's. I had alot of fun in that little car. When I was 17 I traded it for a 77 Chevy 1/2 ton shortbed with a 468 and boy what a pile that thing ended up being.

59 Triumph TR-3 had low slung doors, no heat to speak of, broke every other time I drove it. The hood hinges even broke, took out the windshield but I still drove it to school in the winter with skiing goggles on.
I learned a lot from that car. I got it at 16 for $400 when I sold I got $900 with $2500 invested. By the time I was 17 I could rebuild a transmission and perform body, rust and paint repair. By the time I was 17 1/2 I could rebuild an engine and totally rewire a car and tune carbs. By the time I was 18 I learned not to mess with junk English cars and bought a new Ford truck.
Then I bought a boat. Looking back I probably didn't learn anything!
