View Full Version : I never thought I'd own another Pentax camera

I've been a Canon snob for the last 20 years and have loved their digitals. They were early to the show with beautiful smooth imaging that looked like traditional photography.
I still have two Canon digitals that I use frequently and think are fantastic but I never thought I'd sell my 20D and get into the Pentax system. Not so long ago, I curled my lip at the mention of the brand but here I am and I couldn't be happier.
I love that 40mm pancake lens mounted on the camera body. I like the 21mm pancake too. Those two zooms haven't been on the body in weeks.

Check out the detail on this Sigma lens. If police ever need to identify me they can use that fingerprint that's on the barrel of the lens. This was shot using that DA 40mm Limited lens and the K100D.
This is straight out of the camera using default sharpness. I normally run with sharpness turned down a notch but the extra sharpness is great for some work.

Just food for thought from a former Canon snob. I still love my Canon gear but a couple of months ago my point of view got a little bigger.

Next time you boys get frisky, let me know and I'll swing by with my macro lens.

Tom , you cheap bastard . Should have bought this model instead , when
you decided to turn disloyal to Canon ;) .

Nice thing about the Pentax , you can buy the old K mount lenses for cheap !

I actually prefer the K100D to the K10D. I have no interest in the pixel wars and the lower resolution camera has lower noise. You can have the K10D. I know it can do brilliant photography but I much prefer the K100D for the night time photography I do.
Oh... and I'll not buy Canon again. I love their cameras but I can't say I care much for the service I have received over the years. This last bad experience I had put me over the edge. I was in Pentax land two days after someone I respect suggested I check out the K100D.
I'm starting to get carried away with pentax glass. I've got a ton of K mount MF lenses but I've got two more primes on order and I'm burning for the new Star series zoom that will be released in May.

Tom , sorry about your bad luck with canon's service .Left the camera field in 1998 when service was good :p :) . Who did you deal with ? Canon in Calgary or some yahoo in Toon ? I have a simple Canon digital that's trouble free ,and if any trouble arise , I'll send it to Kevin Felker [ big shot ]
in Calgary at Canon.
Ps; haven't seen FM posting for months . Is there some problem ?

I sent it to the Toronto factory service center.
I have two Canon point and shoot cameras that I love (both are S410 models). It will be very sad when they break because I don't think there's anything else that can compare on the market right now. These new P&S cams are going to smaller and smaller sensors.

Wonder how Pentax' Supersonic focusing compares to Canon's Ultrazoom
motors .My ex professional photographers prefered the Ultra system , because of its quietness and superior speed against the other manufacturer's.

I'm not that familar with Canon's SSM system. I've seen a couple but I've never owned L series glass. It's beyond my experience set to critique L series glass but certainly the results are plenty impressive.
I assume the new stars will have very similar SDM motors to previous ones. They might dumb it down for the series DA lenses. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
I will probably pick up the small star zoom when it comes out and the star light telephoto prime when it's released later in the summer. They will work with the K100D but only with the internal focus motor. The K100D doesn't support the lens based focus motors. That's no big deal to me but I can see I'll end up with a second body soon so it might as well support SDM.
It doesn't make any sense to aquire all this glass when I walk around with a 21mm pancake on the camera pretty much all the time. It might as well be the only lens I have.

Both look right to me. The second one has overpowering brokeh but it's not misbehaving in any way. The first one was taken with a Canon camera and looks pretty much the way my eye sees it right now.
Perhaps it's time for a new monitor.
The desk, by the way, is white oak but it has a really weird stain that gives it that color. I prefer white oak fumed with amonia and then coated clear but the makers of this desk had a different vision.

Monitors are fine you might want to check the settings on that camera. I have never seen a lens that was orange before:

Tom took the shot of his Sigma lens without flash . You know ,he wanted to have that fuzzy warm effect  :D
JBB , buy a Canon , they invented the infrared autofocus system when they brought out the first point and shoot Canon 35M back in the 70's , everyone else copied them afterwards :p .
