A 177 will be OK on a BBC 454 or smaller. I used a 177 on a 502. Not a good idea. A 250 is a better choice for a 454 and will work in a very low boost mode on a 502.

Just curious as to why you don't recommend a 177 on a 502. I have been running my 177's on my built 502's for 3 years now at 5lbs of boost and haven't had a problem what so ever. Just had them refurbished by Darren Mayer Performance Engineering. He refinished the rotors, added teflon strips to them and did some porting on the throat of the blowers where the carb bolts on and smoothed out the inside of the blower casing itself and it yielded me an extra 1.5lbs of boost without having to spin it any faster. I couldn't be happier with them.
