No I'm not trying to get out of anything, however I did get a fix-it ticket yesterday afternoon and honestly it surprised the hell out of me.
Heading from Carlsbad South to SD on I-5 yesterday about 4pmish and a Motorcycle CHP pulls along side, he immediately drops in behind me and hits the lights, I knew I wasn't speeding, I know that my registration is in order, he dismounts, comes up long side of me and tells me that he's stopped me for "tinted windows", I've had tinted windows on every vehicle I've ever owned and never been stopped. I know it's illegal in California but, I just wonder if he was having a bad day or if maybe he's a rookie or??? I've seen lots of cops and never been pulled over for it, just kinda struck me as wierd. Any thoughts??? :D :D

City cops don't care. CHP do. That's their job in a nutshell. Traffic and vehicle code enforcement.

Well, it is against the law.....
How dark are the drivers side windows? Most cops I know don't bother with ticketing unless the drivers windows are so dark, they can't see the driver....makes then nervous...and I dont blame them.

i agree with that, Burbank cop pulled next to me, gave me the little finger wave to put the window down. all he said was "just wanted to see how dark they were, have a nice day". Big sigh of relief and on my way

As I said, I got mine from the CHP as well but had a city PD sign it off since the back of the ticket just says a law enforcement officer, not specifically CHP. The issue at hand is if the local sherrif or PD wants to sign off on it, some just refuse to and tell you to go to the issuing agency.....

City cops don't care. CHP do.
Maybe the REASON for the stop/cite is true here, but "city cops" know that tinted windows are a GREAT reason to stop someone to check out where they are carrying their meth :D
And the darkness isnt necessarily the reason for the law. I believe the CA law says any "transparent material." Most tint films create (or increase) the reflectivity of the window itself, often making it a mirror to some degree. The danger in that is that when you THINK you are looking out the side, you are seeing something else, or not at all. Thus increasing chances for collisions.

Kilrtoy
02-28-2007, 08:24 AM
Ok, is it a fix it chp ticket or go to court ticket......
You can always go to court and pay the fine $90 (I think) and not take the tint off and then never drive on the freeway again....

I almost hate to post here, because I will end up getting nailed. I have double limo all the way around on my tahoe and my windshield is tinted. It is my daily driver. It depends on the department and the officer. I have had many cops pull up right beside me, look, and keep driving. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have my department sticker on the back:D
My brother is FPD, La Habra PD now writes a ticket that is a fix it ticket, however, to get it singed off now, you have to go to the court. PO can't sign it off!!

I hate jacking threads, but this is the result of something that pisses me off even more....The reason the COURT is wanting to see the "fixed" vehicle is because too many cops dont have the ethical courage to stop thinking that they are above the law and "it doesnt apply to them." To all my bro's in the LE field - do not lower yourself, rather challenge yourself and your peers to do it cleaner, better and (here's the hard part) SMARTER than those who we protect (and incarcerate  ).

26708. (a) (1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.
(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat
Basically, most (CA) city and county agencies allow employees to have tint on their personal vehicles. Or should I say, they don't check the parking lot to make sure their vehicles are in compliance with all applicable veh codes.
I know that CHP does. If you want to have tint or no front plate, you don't drive it to work. And then, even if you get away with it for awhile, some supervisor would accidentally see it or otherwise be notified. Once that happens, it is out of their hands, it has to be in compliance or THEY get in trouble as well.
So, the reason so many CHPs write for tint - aside from it being their job - is because they can't have it.:)

Agree, I'm sure that's the reason for the law...
Wrong, the "can't see inside" is an old wive's tale, probably thought up by people that watch too much Matlock or Rockford Files.
The real reason for the law is public safety.
At dusk (or dawn), it's really hard to see a vehicle without its lights on through tinted windows. Pull out in front of them and whammo!
Thanks
