Personaly I like velosity stacks better than scoops. And unless you are turning 8000 rpm's or more a scoop doesn't do that much good.

Never had it ona dyno but a conservative estimate would put it around 650. I know the SVO crate 514 is rated at 600 hp and thats with 9.5-1 comp,a hyd roller cam and single carb dualplane manifold. And I have 12.5-1 comp, solid roller with more lift and duration and two 750's on a tunnel.

I'm undecided too..I want a fiberglass scoop, but the price of the scoop, tray, and mounting bracket, and paint gets expensive in a hurry.

Don't need the tray and hardware for the Hondo-style.

I just made my tray out of some 1/8" thick aluminum plate.
Excuse the mess. It's been sitting in the garage for the past three
months. You get the idea though.
You'll notice there aren't any fastners holding it on. It's just sitting
on there so it doesn't get kicked around while I work on other things
until I can put the motor back in the boat.
You're right about the paint thing being expensive though. I tried to
paint my own (first time painting) and discovered that A) Paint is pricy.
B) I don't know the first thing about painting.
The tape lines turned out alright, but I screwed up by not cleaning the
gun well enough between colors, and you can see in the top photo where
the clear is peeling off. Also had some nasty orange peel. Live and learn
(hopefully learn anyway).
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/scoop_tray_I1.jpg
I used the four rear carb mounting studs to hold the tray on. It was
a little shaky at first and due to the type of carbs I couldn't use the
front studs (accelerator pump in the way on the sidesaddle mounted
660s). The next trip out I made the little strap to give added stability
to the front and it worked fine. (top photo)
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/scoop_tray_III.jpg
Used some allthread for the carb studs. This way you can make
em as long or short as you want. Then sleeved em with some
aluminum tubes so the threads wouldn't show.
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/carb_studs.jpg
The three holes in the back of the tray are per Harwood's instructions.
They say that there should be some means of letting the air escape out the
back.
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/scoop_tray_II.jpg
Bonded some 1/8" thick angled aluminum rails to the inside of the scoop.
No screws, rivets or Zdus fastners showing when it's installed. Just
five nuts to remove the scoop. Four more if you need to remove the
tray too.
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/scoop.jpg
I think I paid $5.00 for the stainless allthread and I had all the rest
of the stuff on my shelf (cuz I'm a packrat). All in all I was pretty happy
with the way it turned out and it was inexpensive.
With some thought, I'm sure you could use something similar to this for
any fiberglass scoop, not just the apartment sized model.

Hey Dan is the boat ready for the test run?LOL

Damn close Jim. I'm modifying my 660s so the secondaries don't kick in til just past half throttle. Hoping for a little better fuel economy at cruising speeds.
Also noticed today that when I put my fuel tanks back in, I pinched my reverse bucket cable between the side of the boat and the hoop. That means I'll have to turn the tank loose again to free it up, then put it back together.
Need a new steering rack and I'll order that up this week.
Should have everything ready for next weekend.
You up for it?

The whole kit is $439.99. The scoop by itself is $199.99 if you want to rig your own mounting bracket.

It's really not that difficult. I have practically no experience with metal work.

If I get it done in time for next weekend, it'll be Bartlett. Saguaro is a fine lake for hanging out with friends, sipping a few cold ones and throwing a game of shoes, but it pretty much sucks for boating.:jawdrop:
Supposed to be in the mid 80's next weekend. Now that's boating weather!

I always liked how scoops look but running un-filtered air out at the river has always scared me. If you saw what was in the air out there you may agree. I have a lotta money in my engine, I wouldn't want to fill it full of Coloradorado River silt...

There's enough room under the big scoops (possibly even the smaller ones) to run air filters if you feel the need.
