Just curious......Do you warm up the motor before draining the oil?

Definately. Too slow and hard to do with cold oil.

No I am not in any hurry..........................;)
I drain it over nite then pull the filters and add the new oil.....then run it and ck for leaks

I always do. I have the set up where you pump it out of the pan. Too hard to pump it when its cold.

Here's why it came up....
I have a homemade oil pump rig and it pumps cold oil no problem. I was looking at the Merc Book for my 496 (double checking the amount of oil I needed to put back in), and I noticed it said warm the engine first because warm oil carries more impurities out......... I figure, if my boat hasn't run in a few months, nearly all the oil (and impurities) are at the bottom anyway, so going cold shouldn't hurt.
Then I thought I'd see what others are doing... ;)
Thanks,
RTJas :D

Yep always have. Plus heavy weights move better with a little heat.

I always warm up engines before changing oil. Its the only way to get the majority of the nasty used oil out. I know some marine shops that actually do not warm up the engine becuase they say it gets to hot and hard to handle   So beware if your are having somebody change it for you. I would request that they do warm it up. At my Dad's shop ACE Marine it is mandatory to warm the engine first. :D

I don't because it takes a long time to get the oil warmed up at idle plus when your done then the filter is full of oil and makes a mess. I have this pump (http://www.boatersworld.com/product/367400033.htm) and it'll suck 12qts of 50w cold in about 5 mins if you do it right. 40w cold is like 2 or 3 mins no problem.

On the way home from the river, I hang a tube through the drain plug and let her go. So, yeah it's warmed up.
P.S., don't follow me home:D

I've never done "seasonal" oil changes( never had a boat that sits for long periods of time) So I have always done them right after I get back from the lake...come back in the morning and pull the fliter and replace the oil.

I try and change my oil every 25 to 30 hours and at the end of the season. I do it after I've had the boat in the water when it's still warm. It seems like doing it this way gets more of the crap out, but what do I know.

I need to ask Alan Stoker what he did when he changed my oil. I'll let you know Jason. ;)

Me too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,supercharged motors LOVE clean oil. Plus we put 15+ hrs on ours in a trip.
You will definately get more junk out if the oil is warm. If you have the time, run the engine first.:D
