If that 348 were a 409 it might be worth 3K, but 348s were slugs, especially with a Rochester 4 jet...........MP

CJ,
I agree! Ray must not have been to a swap meet lately. The 348/409 stuff is off the $$ map! As I reminded someone else here, the 348 in a '59 Impala was the first Chevy to win the Daytona 500 in 1960 with Junior Johnson... Those old motors are unique and have some history not to mention a top 10 hit song!

It was the flip side to "409". I think it was called "Life is great with a 348!"
BTW, I still have the 348 I bought from you. I'm gonna do a rat-rod project with it.

I've built them both, (348/409), and stay with my discription of the 348 as a slug. Sure, if you compare the 3x2 348s to the other available power plants of the day they ran fairly well. I certainly wouldn't want to "mat" a 348 in a boat. I remember the weight of those "wedge" motor pistons? AND, the good 409 heads are not interchangeable.......Now the 409 2X4, that was a screamer, no doubt. Boyd, the asking price at a swap meet could be anything. How many actually sell? And for how much? And, all 4 of the 59 Chevys in Cal already have motors.:) :) .......Ray
PS, what was the 3rd "actual wedge" engine??????

S&SThought it was "life ain't great with a 348" :D :D Did you get that thing apart? If I remember it wouldn't roll over, prob rusted cylinders. Good engine for that project, you got the 3 x 2s for it? Or how about 6 Strombergs?

That would be the MEL 383-410-430-462 that was installed in Lincolns, Mercurys, Thunderbirds and Edsels from 1958 to 1967. Commonly referred to as a "Plank head" engine. Valves flush with the head surface making the combustion chamber in the cylinder. 348/409s were a bitch to bore, machinist cringed when one rolled thru the door as an adapter was needed to align the deck mounted boring bar to the deck. Not bad with modern equipment now.

I'm not sure about the 383, 410, and 462. The 430 was early 60s, then there was a change. Contrary to popular belief, the Mopar " wedge" wasn't a wedge at all. It just wasn't a Hemi, so it became a wedge based on chamber design, not the block.........Now back to your regularily scheduled "ripple head" thread.......MP
