How close to the bottom can your prop be? How close is too close?
Any Thoughts?

I've run them very close (under 1/4") before without any problem from a operational point of view. Some of the racers in here may be able to shed more light on how it might affect performance and speed??

Why is it so close...Is the Prop to Big or is it the strut angle that puts it so close..with the prop 1/4" from the end of the barrel how close is the prop from the bottom...

Strut installed height and prop dia both affect this especially with flat shaft angles like 7-8ยบ. So does barrel length. Someone may have set the strut to a low height for a certain prop having adequate clearance, now a little larger prop gets close... just speculating, lots of possibilities here why it might be close.

It is for his fathers boat. the prop is alot bigger than he ran before. the engine he was running was apron 400-450hp. now he has a blown 500+ ci motor at aprox 650-750 hp. simple question. the new prop is 1/8 in from the bottom. Is there a problem w/ this safety wise or performance? I have run a blown cole flat and the prop was that close w/o any problems. has anyone experience problems w/ running the prop that close?

IF it is something that will be doing alot of "holeshot" leaves I would do some more homework. When a flat leaves and burns the prop the blades actually flaten out as they do this it is possable for diameter to increase. I would contact menkins (ad at the top) or the Grose's in lodi # 209 368-2571 joey. either one should be able to give a measurment.

Mine is really close. Have not measured it but would guess about 1/4"

I only have about 1/4" clearance on mine. We had about 3/16", but it doesn't matter now. It was a 1 1/8 bore prop, and we bought one of those spacers to put it on a 1" shaft, and it just about shook the boat apart! We will not be using that prop....
Thanks Guys! :D
