If you have enough room they have a kit where you turn the alternator around and hook it right to the harmonic balancer. Hooks to the crank with a lovejoy coupling.

I'm using an MSD, just running off the battery. I typically run less than an hour of engine time when I go out so it hasn't been a problem.
The alternator is prolly a project for this winter.

I converted to a mini serpentine style - also a lower ratio so the alternator does not spin as fast.

I run a mag, one wire done deal!.. :)

I run an alt. I spun it around backwards and mounted it to my rear motor plate with spacers. I know a lot of guys don't run them, it just depends on how many electrical accessories you run. If you have a mag, and all mechanical gauges, and no blige pump, then toss it. But if you have stuff running off the boat like bilge pumps, gauges, a stereo, etc... It's a good thing to have.

Actually with all that other stuff, it's mandatory!.. :)

How much waterskiing do you intend to do? Do you plan on doing a lot of stopping and starting? If so, do you want the worry of "Gee, Ive been out here on lake Mead all weak skiing and tubing with no charging system!!! The wind and water are kicking up, I sure hope this thing starts again?????
It all depends on your usage. A double throwdown boat that only comes out morning and night for a couple of speed runs probably doesn't need a charge.
If you have a boat like ssmike had you definately don't need a charge cause the thing never ran! eek! jawdrop :D :D

A well tuned motor starts instantly, I pulled my kids all day long doing the stop and go shit and with a good battery I've gone two days without charging but that's with a mild motor. With a high compression hot rod deal, I still can go for a whole day without a charge!...

On the other hand, if you do have one you don't need a battery charger at all. So, take your pick
Batt. charger or alternator.
1. Play with the charger every 1,2,3, or 4 days
2. Alternator = have one, forget about it , and enjoy your boat.

Thats where my drive shaft connects. I don't think I can run one off my balancer. Cool bracket though.

O.K. So does it not matter which direction an alternator turns?? or do they rewire it to run the opposite direction when turned around and coupled to the balancer? What's the little do-hickey right under the alt?
solar chargers work that well??

There's not enough room to mount it.
So I apologize to 565, dumbass attack. Anyone else need this thing?

For the first 25 years I didn't have one (Mag+ jumper cables and two batteries) now I have one, I run it off of the drive line, because I have my tac coming off of the balancer.
