I feel for you guys in the little boats. We got on the water shortly after noon and it was rougher than shit. Oh, and my boat of choice today was a 38' Donzi. I suppose if you had your kidney belt, no fear, and a paid off life insurance policy, it would be a fun day at the lake skipping across it all. :jawdrop:

Thanks for the photos. We were in such a hurry to get out on some water that didn't resemble an ocean,
we left the cameras in the truck.
We'll get some photos next time.
Had a great day despite my boat sinking on the trailer. Bilge was full of water all the way to the top (literally).
Bottom mount starter and the battery were completely submerged. Had to easily be 300 gallons of water in it.
Amazingly enough it all still works (at least for now). Funny thing was, there was a Southwind parked right next
to mine (on the right behind that beautiful classic black Ford Bronco in the photo) and just about as far out and
it didn't get anything in it. Oh well.
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/DSCF1328.jpg
Bucking problem is fixed (thank god).
We were all able to make some WOT passes in the afternoon at the north ramp. Had we not made the run
up there in the afternoon, I'm not sure it would've been worth the trip.
Anyway I had been wrenching on mine right up to the morning we left, so I was just glad that the shakedown
went well. I'm ready for summer days............... and the river.
Very cool to meet some new folks and looking forward to the next one.

March is typically a windy month. How often do you see wind out of the Northeast blowing 15-25mph steady all day.
I heard a rumor Honeywell paid $20-30k to rent the north ramp. Not that they had alot of boats, just alot of cars, so boat parking was fill with cars. (Of coarse that included the extra portable out houses). I was suprised how clean the place was sunday afternoon. Thanks Honeywell for cleaning up you mess:)

Man drowns at Lake Pleasant after water-skiing mishap
Jane Larson
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 11, 2007 03:09 PM
A 29-year-old man is presumed drowned at Lake Pleasant on Sunday after a water-skiing mishap.
It is believed to be the first drowning of 2007 at the popular northwest Valley recreation area.
The incident occurred about 10:40 a.m. when the man was water-skiing and dropped his shirt in the water, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lindsey Smith said. The man tried to retrieve the shirt and started struggling in the water.
A friend dived in to help the man, but he still slipped below the surface. His name was not released.
Sheriff's office divers were trying Sunday afternoon to determine the safety of the area before trying to recover the body, Smith said.

Often drownings occur due to co2 poisoning while sitting on the back of the boat while running. Not sure if that played a factor, but that is how people go down FAST! The sheriff was also warning us about running dry headers. Oops.

I can see about the co2 making you pass out and you fall in, but he jumped in after his shirt (so they say). And last year a guy drowned after jumping in and never came back up. It just seems weird to me that it can happen like that.

We're not getting the whole story here. The way I see it bodies float dead or alive, unless they're weighted down in some way. The only instances I've ever heard of bodies sinking was in super cold water. I'm not even sure if I believe that one.

interesting report...
"The search continues today for a 29-year-old man who is believed to have drowned at Lake Pleasant yesterday.
The man has been identified as Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Gilbert Aldana of Chandler.
Aldana was just setting out on his boss' boat for a family outing Sunday morning when his shirt reportedly flew out of the boat and into the water. He dove in to try and grab it and started struggling. Someone dove in to help, but Aldana never resurfaced.
His aunt said they know he's gone, but it's hard to accept.
"It's terrible. It's awful just knowing that my nephew is in that water," Marlene Crespin said.
Sonar boats were brought in to try and locate Aldana.
"This water is very unforgiving," said Fire Marshal Howard Munding with the Peoria Fire Department. "What you see above the water is the same thing that's underneath it. There are trees, rocks, cliffs -- you don't know what you're diving into."
Munding said there were nine drownings in the city of Peoria last year. Eight of those were at Lake Pleasant.
"You need to be wearing a life jacket," Munding said. "People don't float, life jackets do. They have to wear a life jacket so if something does happen, you stay on top of the water, you don't go underneath it."
Aldana has a wife and two sons. "
could alcohol have been a factor? too much muscle mass? not enough info, I had heard that he had been skiing and then his shirt blew overboard and he dove in to get it, doesn't sound right...

Actually when someone inhales co2 it some how deprives the body of oxygen and they go straight down.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=6971

by Josh Gross (joshg@sherdog.com)
Gilbert Aldana (Pictures), 29, passed away Sunday morning while boating with his family at Lake Pleasant in Peoria, Ariz. The body of the two-time UFC fighter has been found, the heavyweight's trainer Roland Sarria told Sherdog.com Monday afternoon, but has not yet been recovered.
Aldana leaves behind a wife and two boys, ages 4 and 8.
"He was a devoted family man," Sarria said of Aldana. "His family was everything to him."
According to news reports, the Rage in the Cage veteran drowned after diving into the lake to recover a t-shirt that fell in the water.
"He went out with his best friend and his family," Sarria said. "His wife, his friend's wife and the kids. It was a weird thing that happened, because it happened as they were entering the lake. They were going like five miles-per-hour and that's when it happened. So they never got a chance to even get out in the lake. It happened in the early stage.
"It was really a freak accident."
Aldana was a part-time fighter, a throwback to the day when many UFC participants held second jobs. "It was hard for him to train," said Sarria, who worked with Aladana for close to three years. "He had a job. He had two kids. He was married. It was a really difficult situation for him and it was just hard for him to pour his heart and soul into his training. Plus over here in Arizona we didn't really have the right guys for him. But we did the best that we can for what we had."
That was good enough to land him a shot in the UFC after going undefeated in five RITC fights. The slugger from Chandler, Ariz.
who knows what happened. it doesn't appear to be CO2, maybe alcohol?
What I get from this, is we have to be careful out there and where our vests more often... (I am guilty on this one, I often make a high speed pass without my vest, no more...)

Not saying the co2 had anything to do with this incident. Just saying that it is a common cause of drowning.

From what I can picture ,(from putting it all together), they were going water skiing, they just left the dock, and the victim took off his shirt to get some sun.
He sit his shirt on the back of bench (he was not driving), and starts putting on some suntan lotion.
Notices his t-shirt just blew 10 yards off the boat and dove in. The water was cold (45-55 degrees), the boat had to turn around to pick him up.
Either:
He was not a good swimmer,
The cold water set off a heart attack,
or he injuried himself while jumping off the boat while it was underway going 5 mph.
I doubt it was CO2 or drinking.
How many towels and t-shirts have you lost over the years? I don't loose to many, but some of my guest have from time to time.
What a horrible tragedy. The guy left a wife and two kids.

These trips in the spring prepare us for things we should not be doing...
I had beers on Sunday thought things were cool, backed the truck down the ramp, went to put the boat on the trailer, and someone rode up along side me, We were on it, 2 fearce passes, was laughing about it rolled back to the docks only to see my truck still parked on the ramp, good thing not to many peole caught on...:jawdrop:

Drowned man possibly local cage fighter
Brent Whiting
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 13, 2007 07:48 AM
A cage fighter from Chandler was identified as the man who likely drowned Sunday during a waterskiing mishap at Lake Pleasant.
Sources close to the accident identified the victim Monday as Gilbert Aldana, 29, who fights under the nickname "El Peligroso," meaning "dangerous one."
However, investigators will not confirm an identity until a body has been recovered, said Deputy Doug Matteson, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. advertisement
Sheriff's divers remained at the northwest Valley lake on Monday attempting to make a recovery, he said.Aldana is a former football player at Mesa Community College and worked as a sales manager for Valley Protective Services, a Tempe firm that keeps order among crowds at events like Rage in the Cage.
Michelle Howland, vice president of the Tempe firm, said Aldana was married with two children and was a devoted family man.
"He was the most amazing man you could every meet," Howland said. "He was a gentle giant."
Earlier this year, the 245-pound Aldana told The Arizona Republic that ultimate cage fighters are among society's best people.
"Ninety-nine percent of these guys are the nicest guys in the world," he said. "I'm a nice guy, but I know when to turn it on and off."
Cage fighters combine several forms of martial arts as well as wrestling, boxing and kickboxing.
Aldana competed for Ultimate Fighting Championship and it profiled on - www.ufc.com - the group's Web site.
He has notched at least five wins, but has lot both of his UFC bouts, representing the highest level of cage fighting.
He has a 5-2 record but has lost both of his UFC bouts, the highest level of cage fighting.
Sheriff's investigators said the drowning incident occurred about 10:40 a.m. Sunday when the victim was waterskiing and dropped his shirt in the water.
The man tried to retrieve the shirt and started struggling in the water, then slipped beneath the surface and disappeared, said Deputy Lindsey Smith, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
A friend made an unsuccessful try to help the man, Smith said.

From my life Jr lifeguard days I remember the lifeguards drilling it into our heads "never try to hold on to someone drowning. They may take you down with them". I don't why but it has to do with your body struggling to get air. That's why we are supposed to have a through pad type life preserver. If someone falls out you can get give them the floater to help them survive. I'm not sure if its a law but its good sense. Your body will rise after all the gases form after death. Ask Scott Peterson.
Most people who get a ride in my boat get a little pist when I toss them the jacket. If they don't put it on they don't ride in mine. Sh!t happens quick and if your knocked out cold there isn't time to get a floaty or put a jacket on. I know this 1st hand.

It is the law...any boat 16' and over must have at least one type IV throwable life preserver...
Bigger boats are required to have more but not sure what length...

You guys have to take into consideration that this guy wasnt the smallest guy out there. Yes a body will rise(in time) but once someone drowns there body becomes dead weight. The body becomes water logged and will sink. In time the body will rise like cave said, but one day after it sinks is way to soon for a water logged body to rise. I had a family member die at the river when i was small. His normal body weight was about 165, when they found him he was about 230.
