I'm looking at getting a new boat. I like the look of the Magic deck boat, but I have heard people say that there are some issues with them. To be fair, people cannot seem to remember what the issues are??? Kinda of strange:idea: . The only thing I have acutally heard is that there are flex issues with the boat. Again, not sure if this is correct or not:confused: . The shop that maintained my last boat said great things about Conquest Top Cat. They said they were laid up nicely and the wiring was all good. The Conquest to me just seems to be a bit dated in styling. I just got rid of a Carrera 257 party effect with a 496 Ho. It was a good boat really, just a bit small for the Havasu chop (and a bit dated looking too). So what do you guys think and what input do you have? Oh, one other thing, I would like to stay with the 496HO. So I'm not looking to go really, really fast (probably in the mid 60's at best with that set up and weight)
I would really appreciate the input. Also, I am not bashing Magic at all, infact, just opposite, just trying to find out the shizzel.

Have you checked out the Ultra 26 deck. You will probally save some money also. Great running boat with a HO and handles the chop very well.
BTW- I also like Magic, great boats.

This winter, hands down Ultra from what I seen at the shop, but that is a guess as im just a customer of Ultra and not up to date of what other companies have sold this winter.

MAn opinions are funny things here, I love my Next, if I was to buy a different boat is would be between the Ultra or the Cobra. I fell in love with the 28 cobra deck that they had at the show and fully plan on building one of them to keep in Havasu. Look at both of them they are both a great price!

You are correct. The best part is there are so many to choose from, like a kid in a candy store.

Mine's great. Had it since July '04; about 180 hours on my HO - no major issues with either. The few times I've had Magic work on stuff, it was for minor issues and the service was good for the most part.
About the only complaint I have had with them is they grew too fast - hard to get service appointments, etc. When I spoke with the owner at the boat show, he's made some changes to his company to alleviate some of that.
My .02!

Yea I wish I had that feeling I bought mine without shopping at all, of course I saw the ultra after I bought mine. After seeing them both in person they are both just amazing boats. The look of the Ultra is so modern and sweet, I love their choice of colors too they have great taste. The cobra grabbed my attention as well because it looks alot like a real cat that was impressive to me. There are alot of great boats out there now but in my opinon those are the best for under 150K

I agree. Best thing is you can get a very well equipt Ultra 26 with an HO, 75mph boat for under 100k. :D
I did see the Next at the show and I agree that is a great boat also.

I have a Conquest Topcat2 that i just got, I thought the resale on Conquest is better. I liked the idea that they are a small builder and I have never heard of anything negative about Group One Marine. The bottom of the boat has been changed and a Conquest should be faster. Bolth Boats are very nice but I think that Conquest builds a better product.:)

My 2 cents, I own one and this is because I mainly boat in Havasu and magic is in Havasu, My boat has been great no issues to speak of except the ram on the engine hatch broke but one phone call later and the service guys meet me on the water and fixed it. Not the fastest cat but not the slowest either. It turnes awesome and flat. I love mine. If your ever in Havi PM me and your more than welcome to going for a ride, hell drive it I dont care unless your some drunk meth head. give Kasey a call and say scott refered you and youll be taken care. Since there in havi its perty easy to get a demo. good luck.
Also they diddnt sell that many boats doing something wrong.

The best part of owning a Magic Deck is you get to go to the Regatta. The first one is Aptil 7th, then the 14, 21, & 28th of April, then there is May 5th, 12, 19, 26. And dont forget June, June is a great month because there are 5 Regatta's in June. The 2nd, 9, 16, 23, & 30th. Don't forget about July, 7th, 14th, 21st, & the the 28th. Then the entire month of August will Magic Deck Regatta month.:D :D

you know, you can have issues with any boat from any manufacturer. bad apples can happen randomly. I suggest that you find a manufacturer who will stand behind their product. Shop around, find something that looks cool and buy the biggest, baddest and fastest boat you can afford.
If I were looking to buy a deck boat now, I'd get a Trident. I think Wes has an awesome looking high tech boat and sounds like a pretty stand up guy when it comes to backing his product.

Your question and my opinion:
Magic is a great boat- sure they have sold a lot of boats in the past 3 years--their design, performance, and value has put them in a great position. Personally, I have dealt with many employees at Magic, including the owner on numerous occasions. I find them great to work with. The HO is a great choice - I chose the same power in my DCB 26 and while many think its underpowered - I find it perfect for everyday performance, reliability and best yet INSURANCE!! If you call Phx, ask for Brett and he'll make sure you are taken care of. As for service, here is the letter posted on their website from Ron Moyes - owner of the company.

Conquest makes a great boat, possibly a few more details to the rigging than Magic and yes they make about 50 boats in total per year. The GMs over there are great, not to mention their sales guy KEITH is decent :D :D
One this to mention and think about-- even though the Magic and Conquest are 28' in total length, the running surface is pretty close to that of your previous Carerra Deck. If you take a close look at any others- I would highly recommend the Howard Sportdeck - around the same price as the Magic with an HO, and make a call over to Trident and see what Wes can do with an HO -- would be a nice package, and check with John West and team at Ultra - their 26 deck is one of my favorites and a BEST BUY IMO :D
Best of luck with your purchase - any of these boats will do great :)

As far as Hallet, Quality would be incredible, just lacks any serious styling IMO.

Thanks for all the input. I kept finding it distracting to read some of the threads due to the really nice avatars :D associated with them....NICE! I'm new to this board but it's good hear from some of the bros from glamisdunes.com. I'm fairly active on that site under the same name. Like most of you, I only boat in Havasu and the chop there can be brutal. I have a place over in the Landing near the Casino on the Cali side (live in San Diego). Again, great input and feedback from everyone. As far as the Magic goes, it seems like they are good boats. Like I said before, people seemed to knock them, but apparently without good reason. Glad to hear good things about them from the owners hear. My goal, if I was to pick up a Magic, was to get a used one a few years old. Seems like they can be had for under $100k with a 496HO, plus no taxes.:D Trident is obviously an awesome boat, but a tad out of my price range. The Cobra is a really nice boat. I thought they were a bit pricey too? but I need look into that. Ultra 26 deck boat is a great option (see that’s why I came to ya'll). I’m going to go check them out since I live about a half hour away. Though I'm not sure if I should drop down from a 28 to a 26? I'm also going to take a look at the Howard, not a bad looking deck boat. Keep the feedback coming, I'm sure I'm not the only one looking for a new deck boat and this should help them too>:D :D

Havasu1, One thing to consider is the Ultra is a true 26ft. Very close to the same amount of boat in the water as most 28's with a intergraded swim step. I have the 26 and it handles the chop very well.
Btw- The 26 is the same bottom as the 27 Shadow without the molded swim step.
That being said I do agree that all the above boats mentioned are nice boats and would consider all of them.

Do you ever notice that most of the people giving advice
DON'T own the boat in question. Others recommend the
ones that they like the owners of or the looks of or that
their friend has. And that's all wonderful.
I've sold Magics and I've sold Conquests and dealt with
whatever comes along afterward. Some of my closest
friends are Magic customers from years ago and they
love their boats. Same can be said from Conquest.
We're talking about the cream of the crop here folks.
our boat, the Magic, the Trident, the Ultra, the Hallett
the Cobra. Personally, I've never been in the latter
3 but I sure do like them just from looking. I suppose
I should pick the one that I like and recommend it but
I can't, because all I know is that those company's owners
are great owners and build great boats. End of story.
Personally, I like big swimsteps on the back of boats to
sit on so that eliminates some, I hate sitting on those
billet ones all alone. But that's just me?
Go drive them all, see which one gives you a good deal.
Most people buy the one that they think looks coolest
which is kinda dumb but that's human nature! You're
not going to get hurt on any of those mentioned.
Oh yea, buy the Conquest!

We will be there that weekend, stop by and say hi! If I can get some stuff taken care of around here, we'll make this weekend too.

I would think in today's deck boat market looks would have alot to do with the decision. As stated above, there are several builders that make quality boats so looks were a factor in making my decision and price also. (I would not consider my self dumb) but hey thats me, Im still on the water with all the smart people.
I heard today there is going to be a new deck boat player on the seen real soon. Essex is tooling a 27 deck, this coming form Steve one of the owners.
BTW- I have never owned a boat with a molded swim step so I don't know what I'm missing.
One last thing, Im a fan of all the above mentioned boats and would buy anyone if price was not a factor.

I always look at a boat as a work of art...from looks to rigging to riding. Why do you think some of the guys are getting BIG money for their boats. Of course everything is rigged and layed up bitchen, the ride is there, but you have to think that the looks are bringing in alot of the premium.
I even see bayliners for what their worth:) sumbitch floats, thats good for something.;) They also use the same power as alot of the higher end stock boats...okay, I'll stop now.

I have always loved the Magics and find them to be solid boats. Many of my friends have them and I have heard nothing but good things about them.
If I could sell mine boat, I would consider a Conquest or a Magic or another Ultra.

I was always undecided between Magic and Conquest. Then the Howard came out and then so many new players came on board it really gets tough to make a choice. I'm VERY happy with my choice but its not for everyone of course. Take as many demos as you can because we are all looking for different things in a deck boat.
