My manual say to not run multigrade oil in the boat. Then to run different weight oil depending on the outside temperature of where you live.
Thinking going 40w.

I've been told the same thing but honestly how is a mechanic gonna know the difference? Its not like the engine is going to tell him, "hey dude about X long ago my owner did his own oil change and didnt use Mercury Marine Oils!"

all that heavy weight oil does is put a lot of strain on your oil pump.. 60 weight is way to heavy... my 2 cents. and those that say don't use multi grade???? what motor is subjected to more start stop cruise, high rpms then a boat motor?? its more of a whatever makes ya warm and fuzzy... and topless don't count in that:D :D

40 wt is fine at Havasu because of the temps. I use the Valvoline VR1 20 50. I think unless you have a high rpm motor it probably does'nt matter much. The key is chang it frequently

Unless they can prove that the oil is what caused the failure and you are running a like oil, it's a violation of the Magnuson-Mass Warranty Act. I had something like this with the Chevy dealership. I got the other product manufacturer involved. Once the dealership got a call from the manufacturer they did a quick about face.

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20/50
The V-Twin has more anti wear additives than any other oil on the market. It's also 8 to 10 bucks a quart depending on where you buy it. The only oils in the same league are Redline 20W-50 and Amsoil 20W-50 Racing.
Want a couple of days or reading on additives and antiwear agents???

BadKachina, this is very true. It's one of the best oils out right now. There is a thread going on in gearheads also right now. The antiwear agents are a major factor in oil performance.

I run 60 wt as suggested by my engine builder Clay Smith, mainly because of high Rpms in a boat. Im at 80 psi at idle cold, and 30 psi hot and 70 psi hot cruising.

I'm going to get my book out when I get home. It states why not to use multigrade.
I'll post later what it says. Unless someone else has the info before I do.
I'm sure it's do to the temperature changes that boats go through.

Dad's manual read pretty much like any car manual with a temp/advised viscocity chart, and dad ran the same 10w-40 in Lowrider that he ran in all our vehicles for the entire 25 years he owned her. The engine was fine when dismantled for rebuild/upgrades winter of '04/'05.

I'm going to hold out for the next generation additive which will allow for the use of salt water in the crank case.
Experts predict that by 2011, we'll be running small stones in our crank cases in a science sponsored devil-may-care flaunting of that past foe formerly known as... friction.

Im assuming they are talking about those previously tumbled stones......that will actually polish things inside the case......what a great idea!...

If you'e towing anyone with a 2 stroke, the Yamalube watercraft 2 stroke oil is excellent.
No stink, zero smoke.
It comes 2 ways, pre mix style or for oil injection systems.
Kids always bitched about the really stinky Merc oil exhaust when they were wakeboarding or tubing, and they were right it really stunk, so I experimented with a lot of brands and the Yamalube was tits.
No plug fouling,,15% off on the gallon cases, reasonable price to begin with, worked for us.

Which I think is Quaker State.
Back when I was a car mech and gas station jockey (which HAS been a year or 20), EVERY car I ever pulled a dipstick on, that was foamy, was a QS-filled crankcase.
I don't know if that has changed or not since I decided early on I was never running it and pretty much became a Castrol guy (Rotella in my diesel trucks I've had).

maxwedge
03-18-2007, 07:13 AM
On a serious note, Rotella is supposed to be one of the only oils that still has enought zinc (high pressure additive) in it to protect flat tappet camshaft lobes. The EPA forced the oil manufacturers to take zinc out of thier oils because it harms cat converters. The deisels didn't have the same EPA restrictions until 07 so I don't know if Rotella still has enough zinc in it anymore to matter. Hot Rod had a big article about it a while back.

I run Delo. Comp recommends it. They claim the "new" oils don't have enough of any of the old additives to support the old Mark IV BBC. If that's what they want, that's what they get.

Am i the only one that is using diesel oil (chevron Delo 400 15W40) the base oil is 90% pure compared to automotive oil 75% - 80% then think about the $140,000.00 Cat engines 18-1 compression, huge Tq loads on crank bearings, turbo shafts spining at 160,000 Rpm. floating on OIL. never had an engine lube problem on boat, truck, bike or high compression race olds.

Mobil-1 from Costco. 10-30 in both the dually (Vortec 7400) and the boat (496HO). The truck has the familiar "5-30" on the oil cap. I broke it in with Valvoline 10-40. Switched to Mobil-1 at about 10K.
The 496, if it was in a pickup, would have the same 5-30 oil cap, so I feel 10-30, especially synthetic is a pretty good upgrade.
