View Full Version : Highs went out on speakers...

So im driving in my truck and all of the sudden the highs on my Pioneer Rev 6.5's went out....??? The mids are still working on them...What can cause this?? The are hooked up to an Autotek 4 ch amp and a Alpine 9856 head.....could the amp have blown something??? RCA Cable gone bad?? Please help.....

If you are using the passive network/crossover you can check to see if the tweeters are blown by removing the speaker wire from tweeter output on the crossover and attaching the tweeters speaker wires to a AA battery. Don't leave the wires on the battery for too long because if they are good it will be bad for the tweeters. While tapping the wires across the battery you should here a ticking noise from the tweeter. If you don't here the ticking noise then the tweeter is definitely blown.
What could cause this you might ask. Typically from having the high frequecy level on the head unit up too high causing clipping. This kills speakers.
Sometimes also there is a small device on the tweeter that looks like a capacitor but it is actually a thermal protector that will shut the tweeters off when they start getting hot. Usually they will allow the tweeter to turn back on when they cool down.
