Gonna go pickup a new F-150 this weekend and was wondering if I should get the 5.4 or 4.6. My buddy has the 4.6 in his '03 and it tows fine, so power really isn't the issue. Gas mileage, however, is. I read some where that the 5.4 gets better gas mileage than the 4.6. Anyone have any experience with this?

If your going to use your truck get the 5.4, if its a driver and some times tows get the 4.6. I've been looking at buying a new one myself... just can't find what I want... and its ticking me off.

5.4 is the only way to go, there isnt enogh mileage differance to even think about the 4.6. and the gains of the 5.4 vs 4.6 is better...good luck

I can really chip in here. I just bought an 07' F150 w/ 5.4 SuperCrew, My Father bought an 07' F150 SuperCab w/ 4.6, we bought them at the same exact time and I am guessing his is a little lighter, we have the same bed 6.5', but mine is definitely longer.
I drove his truck all the way to Bakersfield and I can definitely feel the difference with my 5.4. The gas mileage is pretty much identical, he is averaging 17mpg and so am I.
IMO: Spend the little extra and get the 5.4, or else you will always think that you could of had that extra power.
:)
BTW: These trucks are bitchen, they ride like a car and I am absolutely in love with everything about them.

I would work out a lease, rumor is the F150 will have a diesel option in two years, just in time for the lease to end. :D

Actually I found a dealer that has a 06 XLT long bed std cab 5.4 thats got lots of bells and whisles on it... I was going to get liek 6500 in rebates Plus a good intrest rate... I just did not like the color. ( buying for work). I bet its still there... I've been kicking myself for not buying it, but I hated that grey goldish color... Some ppl like it... that and I hate tan int.
I would have bougth if it was gray int... That I could have lived with, but not both

Its its a good motor it will sell like hot cakes. lots of fleets are buying 250s jut to get a diesel, most of them don't need the 3/4 ton... they just only want to buy 1 type of fuel.

yeah, for sure. I would want it just for towing, but want the 1/2 ton so my wife can maneuver it around the mall parking lots and not have to take up 2 spots. :)

Buy the 5.4. The 4.6 is a dog. Take this from someone who has driven and road tested virtually every truck on the planet.

Our fleet buy all 5.4 and V10's something about too many diesels in the fleet allready, with all the big gang trucks. Ca thing I think. I believe the only way you can get a bunch of diesel in Ca for fleet is they have to be emerancy response vechicles, which our's are and over a certian gvw? we cant get them in f250, f350 and f450, just the big boys, so we order International trucks and they come with Cat motors.

Go with the 5.4. little to no difference in milage, and with a good dael, you will be able to recoup the difference when you sell. Nothing worse than towing up that first hill and saying, "damn I wish I woudda"....

i`ve got a ford 4.6 L. When towing my TX-19, it does o.k. on level ground but its weak on the hills. i would`nt pay 3K difference. i`d find a nice used truck with the 5.4 L and let somebody else suffer the big loss.

i dont know if ford has fixed the problem with the sparkplugs shooting out of the heads or not on the 5.4 (happened to my sons 2000 f-i50, and is a common problem) and it strips the head and takes out the coil pac when it does, other than that we have had no problems at all, and we have a few f-150s (also the trannys start shifting slow and acting like its tranny time but a shift kit (b&m )makes them shift better than new

That was only on 99-02 models, the 05+ 5.4 is a 3 valve motor, totally different than the old 2 valve.
Also, just to add to the thread.
4.6 has 248hp@4,750 and 294tq@4000
5.4 has 300hp@5,000 and 365tq@3,750
You would need forced induction OR every single bolt on possible to make up the difference in the 4.6 compared to the 5.4.

Get the 5.4. It tows great and gets the same gas mileage. Also the 5.4 will be alot easier to sell when that time comes.

Is the edge tuner around $500?
I am pretty sure I only payed $2k more for the 5.4.
How about a 5.4 on the edge tuner? :D

LOL. This is exactly what I think when someone says that. Why not the BIGGER motor with the tuner?
Darrell.

The only reason I mentioned the 4.6 w/Edge was for possible better mpg.
I read on other Forums the Edge offers better MPG when you keep your foot out of it and drive normal. I also read the 4.6 offers better MPG, soooooo I would just think the two together may yield better gas mileage while waking up the smaller 4.6...no?

My wife has an '03 expedition with the 4.6 and 3.73. WHAT A TURD!!. Do yourself a favor and get the 5.4.
Have you ever heard anyone say, "Damn, i wish i would have gotten the smaller motor", ?

I've owned F-150's with both. The 5.4 is a lot better. The 4.6 was a turd and the mileage was almost the same as the 5.4. The 5.4 towed my boat a lot better also.

My wife has an Exp w/ the 4.6 and it sucks too. The gas mileage is the same if not worse because the smaller engine has to work harder to get that thing up to a decent speed.

Go with the 5.4........It is a stellar motor in the new 3V model.......
I have owned both.......the 4.6 is a GREAT motor........
But the 5.4 is just awesome.
I raced a F-150 with one for several years, and it runs and runs.......
I drive a F-250 right now with one, everyday......I also tow my 14,500 toyhauler with it......no problem......hard on gas when towing, but I set the cruise at 65 and dont even think about it......
