Does anyone have a rudder for a Flat laying around? I need a used one for a 1 inch shaft. Mine is cracked and am hoping someone has a good used one laying around.

I run one of Dan's rudders. The rudder is your life, spend the money on a new one! http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/1191myboat-med.JPG

Lilflatte,
I purchased my rudder from Wayne Mettler @ Canyon Boats. He is very knowledgeable, and has been builing and racing Flats longer than most people have been alive. (970) 858-0091
Another man who can get you a rudder is Tom at Menkens V-Drive. Tom is a class act, and will only sell you the best stuff. (530) 885-0531
Unlike some that I have run across, if you send either of these guys a check, you will get your rudder.
Good luck,
Cole Man.

Canyon Marine's phone number is 661 254 5405 and has been that for quite some time since the purchase from Carter Read who bought it from Wayne. Any parts you might need for Flatbottoms or Hydro's I will be more than happy to help as I have been doing this for 20 plus years with many IHBA, NJBA and SDBA records to show as well as quite a substantial list of very satisfied recreational boaters.
Thanks Dan

Dan,
My last comment was not directed at you. Our paths have never crossed.
Lilflattie,
I believe I purchased my last rudder at the Castaic race two years ago. $240.00 maybe?
Hope the info helps.
Cole Man.

Why would anyone have(GOOD)used one laying around?. If they are getting rid of it, it's because they won't run it themselves!..Just get a new one, it's your ass on the line!.. eek!

Oh-Geez, here we go...I have three rudders laying in the garage, all good, rusty but good. I have replaced the rudder in my alky deal after every two summers just because, well just because it makes me feel good. Quadrent, cables, chain and everything that goes with it.
As you can tell the rudder is extreemly important to me and it is one of the determining factors as to which way your life will go!!!!!!!!! Left, right, dead end or straight as planned.
Your welcome to any one of the three.
If it were me, I'd buy a brand new one, but it's your ass on the line not mine.

Hey guys, I understand what you are all saying. I have no death wish, and I know how important the rudder is. However, this is no race boat, and not even very fast. So, if I bought one that was used but magged with no cracks then what am I missing?

I got an old "NO PARKING" sign pop-rivited to a broom handle wink ... That should be good enough. How's $5.00 sound? :D
Not to be a smart ass but we had 2 Crackers break 4140 rudders last weekend in Burley. One lost his water pickup and fried his motor and the other almost ended up on shore... Spend the money and buy a good rudder.

I bought a used one from "E-Ticket" for $40. I ground the chrome off it, had it bead blasted and magnafluxed, and I run it. It's fine, if you check it out well. Now, would I run it on a full on race rig, No, but for lake use it's all good. I think he had another one too. Look him up on the boards here.

"No, but for lake use it's all good". C'mon Ducky, a 100mph at a race or on the lake!. eek! What difference does that make!.. eek! :)

But a lake boat that does 100 (kinda rare) seldom sees that kind of use, especially if it's a flattie (Circle boats excluded :D ). My motor has been ready to rip for a couple weeks now, and I haven't had the water conditions or the space to get it past 4000 rpm yet. I usually cruise at 40-50 mph (2400 rpm :D ) And there are good used parts out there. People wreck boats, or the hulls get too rotten to fix, and they strip them, etc.... If the parts are checked out well, what's the difference between a used one and a new one? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't take a rusty used rudder and throw it on my boat, but if it passes a magnaflux, why not?
