View Full Version : Any Runners out there?

I started running again and I know I am getting old. However, for the past 3 days, the "insides" of my knee (both knees) are killing me to the point that I can't run. Walking is fine, but I notice they are there - almost like my tendons.
I look up on the internet and it talks about knee clicking and outside of my knee. The only thing I can find on the inside knee topics are "torn" or injury to the tendons articles. Well, I doubt that I tore both interior tendons at the same time so let's move on from that. Simple over-working of the tendons? I don't run on my heels or do anything like that and my running shoes are just that - running shoes.
Any ideas?

Gosh, I don't know....Maybe go visit your "bone" doctor?
I've had a torn menesc(sp) on my left knee and it hurt ALL THE TIME. Bending my knee, straightening my knee, it would "tug" behind my knee cap.
Outpatient surgery fixed that. :D
Does it hurt all the time or just when you run? Both knees?

It can be any number of things from lack of stretching....
it can also be the intensity of your workout, distance, surface, they are all contributing factors...
If you're running beyond your abilities an injury is almost a given.
My advice, start of slow with short distances on a flat surface - don't try to do what you use to do immediately
and above all ice and rest :D

Try shark cartilage. I took it when I hurt my shoulder wakeboarding & it really helped. Get it in any vitamin section.

Don't worry about your left and right knee. As long as the wee knee works, your good to go. :)

YOUR KILLING ME RICK,
Like MA21 state it could be alot of things, Maybe shoes, you need to change running shoes every 3 months or 300 miles. It is most likely since you have been in active for so long, that these pains are coming, a good long strech is always required. I feel your pain, trying to get back to the glory days aint happening here either

It's your miniscus. Look it up online to see what I am talking about. Over years of use this will wear out and let bone rub on bone. The clicking your feeling is the MCL, this is a tendon on the inside of your knee that is likely a little strained and it is due to just getting started again. Someone else said to stretch.....that is excellent advise. Be sure you stretch before and after you run. Take it easy for the first week or two, maybe a mile or so and I would recommend if you have a gym membership anywhere that you start on a treadmill. The treadmill is lower intensity and will help you get back into shape with a little less fatigue to the body.

Could be your shoes. Go to a store that specializes in running shoes. They will make sure the shoes you buy are right for you.
I used to compete in triathlons in my twentites... and ran a marathon a few years ago... this is good advice, but I would also go see an orthotics specialist and have inserts made for your shoes that make sure your feet are positioned correctly and align your knees, etc... Trust me. I blew out my knees skiing..when I was a kid... the orthotics worked and allowed me to run without much, if any, pain!

The Doctor is in:
The problem is not in your knee's......its in your hands.
Prescription:
Remote control in left hand.
Beer in right hand.
Ass in recliner.
Problem solved....
If problem continues, try a blow job...it may not help your knee's but life will be better.

I used to run cross country and when we would do our workouts on concrete rather than dirt, my knees would kill me. If you can run on dirt it is a little better. Dirt is more forgiving than concrete, or try a treadmill. But if you are looking to get into better shape, the things that I found worked the best for me was a rowing machine (full body workout), or the elliptical. I never tried orthotics or anythig like that... But that may be a good option as well...

Did you try to get right back into it quick ? I've been running on and off for years and have experienced all the injuries associated with it.
I had heel bursitis (sp) and plantar facitis (sp) the other year and that was a bitch. I recovered from those but the ultimate solution to most injuries is exagerate your stretching prior to running and never rush things !!
I run Baker to Vegas each year and am running it this year as well. I take the pre runs very slow and make sure I stretch deep and run low mileage early on. The biggest thing I did was go to a running store that specializes in shoes and get the right shoes. That made a huge difference and I haven't had any issues at all this year.
Sounds to me like you might have strained your meniscus (sp) which can be from rushing your mileage or pushing above what you should too early. Give it a week or two of no running and you should be fine to start over.
Running is a bitch but after each run I feel so much better. A girl I know that didn't run before just did a marathon for the first time, 26.2 miles !! Was amazing watching them come across the finish line after a run like that !!
Good luck !!

RUNNING SUCKS. I am prone to shin splints and I ran to the point of stress fracture and beyond. Make sure you get the right shoes. Brooks Beast if you are a big guy.

Went through serious training last summer which was mostly running. I'm 37 and never got into or enjoyed running. I had huge problems with my knees. All I can say is shoes, shoes, shooooz.....
** MCL is a good point also.... rode my bike from pleasant to parker last year and had big problems with my MCL.
