I got a call from a guy in Phoenix who wants to show me this new engine/drive system. It's made by Sword Marine Technology and called the "JetPac (http://www.swordmarine.com)".
It's a self contained engine/jet-drive system. Power is currently available in 2.8 litre 200 HP International diesel or 5.7 litre V8 300 HP Gasoline engine, with larger engines in the works. The diesel uses standard off the shelf International diesel parts (filters, etc) found at pretty much any auto parts store.

This thing bolts on the back of the boat, like an outboard, and the housing provides bouyancy. The jet is a high volume, low pressure as opposed to the low volume high pressure of conventional jets. The jet is driven from a kevlar toothed belt (similar to an engine timing belt), and is reduced slightly from engine speed.
Probably not in the classification of a "Hot Boat" but still a pretty interesting concept. Could actually work better for my purposes on the lower River than an inboard aluminum jet. Bolted on the back of a 19' Boston Whaler would serve my needs well.
Anybody have any dealings with these things?

Fuel Consumption numbers look impressive...

That looks like the portable toilet from my camper. Does it use the same anti-septic tablets?
Great idea, though. :)

Maybe Wes should try and bolt a couple of these up to the back of his boats.

But what about when you are on the trailer? Seems like some trailer mods would be in order to support that thing when bouncing down the road.

now even outboard types can be less gay by upgrading to a jet , maybe they will make v drive lmao -- sry but that is gayer than the fab five :D

Since it provides bouyancy, can we bolt it on the back of a 21 and legitimately call it a 24? Could we stretch that # an other foot with a molded in swim step on the unit????

I saw that same setup at the Miami boat show probably a good 4
or 5 years ago..
Doesnt seem like they have gotten anywhere.
Think its a dumb idea myself but what do I know.
Lastly,Mercury outboards have been available with
jet drives for as long as I can remember.

:D
I would imagine a 250hp "Jacker" would perform a lot better than that
thing hanging off the backof the boat.

I would think that, all thing being equal, a 300hp unit would perform better then the 250hp Merc unit. I don't see any reason to "jack" a jet drive... Just set it and forget it. Of course, I have absolutely no experience with either unit and never will, but I like seeing new stuff and always hope it works if it's an interresting idea.

Usually a 250hp V6 outboard will run as fast or faster than a 300hp V8
inboard so with that in mind is why i said the 250merc outboard/jet would
run faster than a 300 V8 engine/jet
