I'm building speaker enclosures for in-wall speakers and was wondering about the how high I should mount them in the wall. I've seen them at eye/ear level and also at the top of the wall. Do vaulted ceilings make a difference? Any help would be great.

I thought in-wall speakers didn't need custom boxes?

These will be back2back with our bedroom so I need as much sound deadening as possible.

You need to contact the MFG to get enclosure specs.... Several mfg's have prefabed inwall enclosures that fit between the studs. They are engineered for optimum performance.
The shape and surfaces of an area will always affect sound. Is this a dedicated home theater or a livingroom surround sound? Wall speakers are optimum as compared to inceiling. Are all of your speakers inwall or do you have towers up front?

Both Roz. In the family room I've bought a Yamaha YSP-1 to mount under the plasma but I'm not sure I'll completely like it, so I was going to build the enclosures "just in case". In ther basement I've walled in an area for a true theatre and will be going with the 7.1 system. I haven't bought any speakers yet so I was going to build the enclosures with a blank face, so the drywallers can do their stuff.

YSP1 is for a room that is either square or rectangular with complete walls. If the room has any large openings to the side or back, it will not work properly. Also, was it set up properly?

It is always best to have the tweeters at ear level when sitting down, a foot up won't make much of a difference, but anything higher will. Also, don't forget to calibrate the system for best performance.

Right now our family room shares walls with the kitchen and it will be the same in the new house. Would I be better to put the YSP in the theatre room and go with the in-wall stuff upstairs? Can I call you?

That was the info I was looking for, thanks. What do you mean by calibrate, are you talking about ajustments made to the reciever in relation to speaker placement/seating area?

Yes, get an SPL meter (Radioshak carries them, $30.00) an go to town.

C4L,
I don't know if you're buying a new receiver or plan to use the one you have, but the new ones do this for you automatically... most in the 600.00 retail range now come with the mic.. The new Yamaha setup process is very easy... So, If you plan to buy a new receiver don't waste the money on the SPL meter...

As far as speaker placemant in this setup, I basically agree with Jruiz. Since it's not your "theater" and it flanks a bedroom, I'd consider inceiling speakers.....
As far as sound deadening the joining wall... I have done something that worked quite well. In the column that the speaker is mounted, I lined the back of the other room's wallboard and studs with dynamat, and then mounted a piece of 1/2 mdf over the dynamat. As long as you have the depth, it will help deaden the sound without affecting the speaker too much...

My Pioneer Elite receiver calilbrates itself, but I still double check it with the meter. I also use the SPL meter because I have an eq for my subs and it helps me tune every frequency. I also use the meter for my cars, it is a good invesment for $30.00.

My Klipsch IW-150's are about 1' above head height while sitting on the couch. If you have room behind your couch/chair or seat position, I hear it's best to move them back - you get more stage to them, but I've never had a room big enough to have space behind the couch. :) My couch is right on the back wall, so the rear effects are on the side walls, facing the couch.
