Well guys...I know I haven't posted on my project in quite awhile...
So far I have all the dash stuff mounted. Wiring is almost done...kinda took a break from it...I'll probably finish it up tomorrow. However I did get the new steering column and cable installed. The reverse cable is in, but the lever isn't fully installed yet.
The pump is also in. We also had installed the rails awhile back, and now finally we have completed phase 1 and 2 of engine test fit.
Phase 1 - ironman44bear made my motor plates taller than they needed to be so that we could machine them to the correct height for proper driveshaft alignment. We basically mounted the engine plates and dropped the engine in with the plates "as made" to figure out how much too high the plates were so that we could cut them down to the proper height.
Phase 2 - Install the motor with the plates machined down with the driveshaft installed to check. The alignment couldn't be any better than it is now so I proceeded to drill the holes for and install the pillow blocks to bolt the motor in place. Once all the drilling was done, we pulled everything back apart so that I can take everything and have it all powder coated.
The one thing I was worried about was my 9 quart pan not clearing the bottom, but once we dropped it in we noticed during phase 1 that we had about 1 1/2" between the bottom of the pan and the bottom of the bilge, and the motor only needed to come down about 3/4". So we were good on that.
Pics of results of Phase 1 - Note the severe angle in the driveshaft from the motor plates being too tall:

And these next 3 are the driveshaft after the motor plates were cut down. I don't think you could ask for better alignment than this.

And here is our engine as she sits now. I finally got my oil pump pickup dillemma fixed so we can now continue onward with the assembly of the motor. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have the motor finished.

Looks like it is a bit late, but there should be a couple degrees of angle in the driveshaft between the pump and motor. You will go through u-joints quick without it. You may have the angle already and I see an optical illusion, but I would be concerned if not. Looks great other than that!

There actually is a little bit of an angle...it's hard to tell in the pics, but I can see that there is a little bit of one. I don't think you can ever get one of these shafts to line up EXACTLY straight anyway.

Well I took my rail kit to the powder coat shop today...should be done by Wednesday.
Hopefully by then I'll have the motor assembled enough to drop it in the boat, then I'll finish the assembly in the boat.

Good cause my boat is mostly WHITE, for all the white boys at the depot.
So is mine...
But the parts that are black are working to hold the motor up for a white boat. :D

Well...very productive day today. Got the oil pump in, sealed up the oil pan, and got the heads on.
Also, I mounted the headers...Bassett headers for some reason will not clear ARP head bolts, so I had to break out the die grinder and modify them a bit to get them to clear. But they fit good now.
I'll be painting the heads on Thursday.

The whole rail kit is all ironman44bear's design and build, even the pillow blocks. Everything is billet 6061 aluminum...the bolts are stainless and the tensile strength of the rail bolts are 80,000 psi, while the bolts that bolt the motor to the pillow block are I think around 170,000 psi. Motor plates and rails are 3/8" 6061 aluminum...this rail kit could easily handle a blown big block.
Ironman has always been all about "showing up to a gun fight with a bazooka". :D

that motor stand looks likes its crying..........motor looks good
i have the same prob with the arp bolts and header flanges. i liiked at a few other motors and they do not run the washer on the bolt. im still not sure what im going to do. i seal my pan manana and start fabbing the scoop tray. :)

Yeah the shop where I'm working on it at doesn't like motors with the heads on them. Hopefully by the end of the week the motor will be in the boat and I'll finish assembly while it's in the boat.
I can't believe I didn't think of not running the washer on those bolts. Oh well...I've already ground the clearance notches into the header flange...worked out rather nicely.

Well I got the engine installed tonight. Was too dark to take pics so I'll have pics tomorrow.
I painted the heads before we dropped it in. For now I have the intake and the valve covers bolted to the motor with no gaskets just to enclose the motor so nothing gets in it. Also it made it easier with the intake on the motor to hoist the engine with a carburetor hoist plate.
I still have to get my pushrods. 396 is gonna hook me up with some badass ones.
