View Full Version : Will these hold?

I would like to put 2 in the front. 1 on each side and 2 in the back. 1 on each side and do away with the straps in the front. Do you think there would be to much wind pressure (at speed) on the carb lip in the front and break chunks out of carb lip? These are machine screws with selflocking nuts now but I will be bolting with Harden bolts and selflocking nuts.

You will be just fine. If you do a search under "mounting scoops" you will find a pic that Duane posted of the way he mounts them. Pretty much the same as what you have done, but without the straps on the front.
Hope this helps!

Where did you get the Z-clips? Great idea. That scoop isn't going anywhere.

Top secret I can't tell ya:D No, I got them from work:eek: There cams off of some locks for doors. Do ya think it will hold with just the clips? Ya know 1 clip on each corner. I would do away with the straps then.

Yeah, it'll hold. I've ran a buck with the scoop tray just smashed between the flame arrestor & the carb with the one bolt in the center of the carb.

Was it this high of a scoop thou?

Thru bolt the clips with washers on the inside of the tray to distribute the force. Don't see why it wouldn't work just fine that way. Nice and clean, I like it.

Pretty ingenious repurpose of those lock parts. Looks plenty strong to hold without the straps.

what if the washers worked their way loose?

I think I would test the clips before removing the straps. Loosen the straps enough to let the clips take the load, if they don't bend or break, then remove the straps. Or put floatation in the scoop!!!!!!......MP

Then I would say the nuts worked their way loose.
How is it held on now??? The picture does not show the inside with any screws or bolts thru it. Would just the threads of the 4 screws or bolts have enough strength at speed? The picture with it showing the inside looks like it's just resting on there when it was new.

Your exactly right. It is just resting on there when it was just put on. Then I drilled holes for bolts. I will be putting in hardened bolts with washers and self locking nuts. The good locking nuts that turn hard all the way off with plastic insert in them.

I guess you could put a couple of dabs of JB Weld under each washer so they don't come loose and go down the carb.

I use chewing gum. It works better and when your not riding around you can reach back and have piece of gum.

I think I would be more worried about the dabs of JB Weld breaking loose and going down the carb than the washers at that point.

yea, I guess one could always run a full length piece of threaded rod from the center of the carb to the top of the scoop. Just think, you could then put one of those little bowtie insignia hold downs on top.

Just tack weld some bolts on there and put the nuts on the bottom.;)

Forget it. Just gonna go with this. That way the tray will be bolted down correctly and the throttle cable too and it will be a safety plate also. I did not know that you are suppose to have one under a Dominator carb.

I never heard of it either but here it is.

I'm thinking the Carb/Scoop mount will do the job of the safety plate. Dont think you need them both.

How's that gonna stop crap from going in the motor? Does it have a screen or something? If it does, would that not "F" with the air flow & cause turbulence? I run the scoop mount (now) like the one you have pictured, and there is no screen.

The safety plate is strictly for the Dominator carb. It keeps broken carb linkages from entering the intake, in the event of a breakage. The Dominator carb has internal linkages, unlike the 4150 style carbs with external linkages. The Dominator linkages are exposed to the intake when installed, the safety plate covers the linkages and keeps them contained inside the base of the carb.

NO, you don't put both on. Run either one. It's just that one is strictly for safety plate and the other will do the same thing plus be able to mount your scoop and bolt down throttle cable also.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll have to look at a dominator and see what you are talking about.

Misread you earlier post, looks like a good set up and kills 3 birds with one stone.

If you want to put a filter on it you can get one of these from GZR. http://www.gozaracingproducts.net/1137g.jpg
