I need to rebuild my aluminum oil pan from a rear sump to a front sump v drive pan. I want to cut the bottom off and weld in a new one that has a steep angle toward the front of the block.
In looking at this I could use some input.
The windage tray is mounted parallel to the crank now.
It seems that it will direct the oil forward (rear of the engine) while cruising because of the approximate 4 degree forward angle that the engine will be mounted on. In a jet or a car application the oil coming off the windage tray is always dumping into the sump end.
Will that be a problem ?
I havent checked out any v drive pans to see what the windage tray setup looked like.
Secondly, The pickup will have to be long to get to the other end of the pan.
Has anyone used a braided line inside the pan or an external braided line to get from the sump to the pump ?
Third, The windage tray that came with the pan I have is mounted in the pan with Dzus fasteners. It would make more sense to me to mount it off the main caps and possibly mount the pickup tube under it. Which is more desireable ?

I can't use a standard chevy pan because I have an Arias block.

Should I have such a piece as this there would be no question in my mind to go dry sump or at least....external oil pump....but:
Arias was king of the blown alcohol V drive motors many years. I would think Eric (Blurred Vision TAF) or one of those guys could show you what tray they run, etc. I am sure the windage tray was always mounted to the pan and not hanging on studs as most drag race pans were.
The internal hose deal you mentioned....Jerry Dorman used to that with a #16 line to the front. It was a pain to get the oil pan off and on but it worked.
Nice piece.

Mark:
I wouldn't worry about the tray, just punch some holes in it for drainage.
Or, let me know if you can use a louvered windage tray I have laying around with a hemi pattern. Maybe you could use it as a starting point. The Dooley pickup is shaped about how you will need it to be, you could just buy one and work around it or make one the same style. Do you have trap doors in your pan? Should be easy to reverse them.

Thanks Jim,
That louvered windage tray that sandwiches between the pan and the block looks interesting.
I had problems with the windage tray on the aluminum pan I have. It broke loose and was moving around. The Dzus fasteners held but the mount broke off.
I'd like to see the one you have.
