I just picked up a 68 Gaylord (that still cracks me up!) its got a 440 Mopar in it, the V drive is Halibrand which im told kinda sucks, just curious if anyone can tell me what to look for in it, I got it cheap, so worst case Ill strip it... just lookin for some opinions...

Have a C500 Vdrive if you decided to change it out... has 29's in it and have a set of 15's. Also have a velvet drive which would be a nice combo..
1500 for the set...

Nice boat, what are the plans for it?????.. What you have is a ski boat, PERIOD!.. That v-drive is weak and stuff for it is pretty well non existent anymore, and I'm sure all the underwater hardware is all bronze and not steel. Using it as a ski boat will probably run forever, but if you plan on a hot rod and speed it will need a total remake!..

My buddy made a few calls before I bought it... he said the V drive was basiclly junk, Like you said as well, I was thinking about getting it running, just because its all there... Im unsure right now, I may end up just parting it out, I really bought it for the parts... then I started thinking!!! I only paid $800 for it so worst case Ill cut the bow off and hang it on my garage wall!!!:D

I've got one. Fresh bearings, ready to go, but I don't remember what gears are in it.....IMO, these v drives are under rated. Alot of the older hot rods had these units in them and they worked quite well..............MP
Oooops, its a Hallcraft, not a Halibrand...........

If you decide to sell it let me know. My friend Bill Gaylord is the son of the original man who built these in the 60's. I'm sure he would love to have one back.

I had a Halibrand v-drive in a Kindsvater ski flat back in the 70's and it worked great, it had a stock L88/427 and it handled that hp fine. Any more hp than that and you need to start changing stuff, the only problem I had with that v-drive was the mounting bolt's (the one's that bolt into the side of the v-drive it self) vibrated out and wrecked the treads. Dont cut it up that's a cool old boat.

Don't cut that boat up. I had an old Laveycraft that my daughter now owns and the old boats are just plain cool. :D :coffeycup v-drive
