Is this motor on a boat? You better check your tach.

What l/u ratio do you have? 2:1?

I Was Told Its A 1.87 Ratio And Tach Is Dead On, So Whats The Deal. Boat Is A 1988 Laveycraft Sebring With A 2.4 Xri With Efi On Jackplate With Aftermarket Nose Cone

Something is off, or you have the world fastest 88 lavey.

can turn motor past 7 grand if you let it, its a new merc. tach checked it verse another one with a gps, tach was in boat when bought

7K - 1.87:1 - 30" @10% = 98.90
7K - 2:1 - 30" @10% = 92.47
You have 2:1 or your tach is off, or both.
I would rather spin a smaller pitch wheel and a big gear. The paddle-wheel effect isn't as bad.

Why don't you tell us what the gps says and also what kind it is. I personally don't think that combo will trun a 30 @ 7k+ BUT I was wrong once!

fastest run i got out of it was 81.2 going with wind, prop shaft level with bottom of hull 16 gals of gas 8 in each tank, by myself I weigh 230. checked with a new tach out of box, tach goes to 7000 rpms and i did peg it ounce not paying attention. merc. cleaver prt# as follows 48-78800a-4 30 pitch, prop was checked and is 30 pitch, solid hub over prop exhaust.. I talked to owner before it was bought he traded it in and nothing to lose to tell me it runs 90mph, no reason for him to lie......

What kind of a tack has a gps? You mean you used a GPS and prop calculator to figure out aproximate RPM? Sorry, fkboatman... I'm not sure I'm following.
How enthusiastic is it when it goes past 7K? If it flies by climbing like crazy, you've probably got your tach set up for a 4 stroke. Most tachs have a switch on the back for different engine/ignition types. Also, most of the portable tachs I've seen are 4 stroke only so that could explain why another tach matched your readings.

In the history of used boat sales, nobody has ever told the truth with regard to top speed. Nobody.

I didn't see your post before my first response. This puts my 1/2 RPM theory out the window. There's no way you were doing 81.2 at 3500 RPM. :D

sorry handheld gps made by garmin, new tach out of box made by teleflex and its the international series, set for a two stroke outboard, I am a marine mechanic by trade bein in the business 20 years, so i know how to hook up a tach...... thank you

Understood. I didn't mean to insult you.
Maybe you need a bigger prop? :D
Those numbers you posted do show 23% prop slip with 1.87:1 gears. It can't be handling worth beans with prop slip like that. A bigger prop may not be the answer. Maybe something is causing the prop to ventilate a little (perhaps something on the bottom of the boat?).

That post seems a bit on the condescending side going to some one that is trying to help you.
There is a setting on the back of your tach 2, 4, and 6. Maybe you have it set on 4.... or your tach is bad, or you have a 2:1 gear and a lot of prop slip.
Marine mechanic? Then you should be able to figure it you for yourself.
Mark the flywheel and the prop shaft.... If you turn the flywheel over twice and the prop shaft turns over once, you have a 2:1.....
Good luck... or would that be LOL! http://www.***boat.com/ubb/graemlins/idea_2.gif

I went and checked the ratio, it is a 2.1 ratio lower unit, okay so now whats the easiest way to deal with the prop slip issue, i take boat out trim boat out out then raise jack plate and go for it

My guess would be to go to a chopper. What is your boat like, I have worked on a Lavey, but it was bigger and had one of those hot-tub-car-boat-fag-i/o-motors in it. :D :D :D :D
:jawdrop:
And what do you use it for, light load? Cruising? Throwing a bunch of babes in the boat?
Didn't mean to sound like an asshole (yea I know, if the shoe fits wear it... http://www.***boat.com/ubb/graemlins/idea_2.gif) !!!
If you haven't checked that prop on a real pitch gauge, you have no idea what it is. It could be pitched down as much as 2"... and be progressive, depending on what kind it is and who did the work on it.
One more thing... the accuracy of the gauge... and this depends on the gauge. The closer to the max point, in your case 7000rpm, the more it will be off. This is why if you are turning 7000rpm, you buy a 10,000rpm gauge. This is only MY opinion.... I know it may not hold true in all situations, but it is the rule I follow.
Along with drinking plenty of beer.....:)
And hanging with skimpily dressed women!

boat is used for ripping the lake and occasional tubeing, but have plenty of 22-25 pitch props for cruising and tubeing, prop was checked at well known prop shop here and said it was un-molested 30 pitch mercury cleaver. really would like to know how to get slip down and really make its full potential with it, i have a triton tr-21 bass boat with 225 efi merc which is a 1998 and runs 80 mph all day, its turning a 4 blade 25 pitch prop which was on it when i bought boat and has a manual jackplate. so tell me whats the deal to get all of it to run, I WILL SEND SOMEONE PICS IF THEY NEED TO LOOK AT BOAT.

LOL!!! Is your speedo happy? ;)
I think your prop or your set up is not right. Borrow a chopper from some one. They are a better all around prop IMO.
