I always thought someone could design one like a dyson vacume. Cyclone effect.

Hey Marty, i had one on my boat. Heres a picture. It did work to stop sand. I hit a sandbar once idling out and it filled the strainer up with sand and stopped water to the engine. You just have to be careful and have a way to notice if the engine is not getting water. I have a water pressure gauge in my dash so i can see if i dont have any water to the engine. I mainly put it in to stop trash from getting in my t valve. I actually just took it out.

Lots of them out there. I have one of these on my well. http://www.lakos.com/
It should be easy to build a scaled down one.
No filter, just spin-down.
An auto ball valve can purge it while in operation.

I use the same type filter as Taylorman.
There are several companys that make them. The bigger they are the less you have to clean them . . .

I'm working on an on-the-fly selfclean set-up as we speak . . .
In the pic. the rubber hose is for an emergency situation.

The absolute best way to go. Nothing filters out sand like this unit. Hardin Marine Sand Strainer (http://www.cpperformance.com/detail.aspx?ID=6786)

what about putting brass valves where the drain plugs are just above the oil pan rail to occasionally flush out sand?
