SERIOUS ISSUES

We made the first trip w/ the wife new boat Sat. and had some problems. Has any one had a oil filter implode it's self? I have had 2 go bad now. the oil pressure is at 75psi under power. This is a new one for me.
BBT if you read this maybe you can give me some insight as well. did this motor ever do this to you? also it has a bad miss in it. Did you re-jet the carbs after you got it and if so do you remember what came out of it? I was only able to get 5800 rpm out of it and if I remember right you said you got 7800. also what altitude did you run at? I plan on doing some trouble shooting this week and before I get started it would be a great help to get more history (any othe changes you made). thanks for any help.
Special thanks to J.J. at Beaverfab for the quick delivery of the split coupler. that is one nice piece of work. I will be using you again once I get the Hydro project started.

Chad, I NEVER had any problems whatsoever with the motor. In fact, it had pretty low hours on it. I was definitely able to get the motor into the 7k's. 5800 don't seem right.....
Keep in mind, most of the time I ran it with a different carb/intake but that shouldn't effect the rpm's that much.
I never had any oiling issues with it. And the carbs were never rejetted. That intake system/carbs came off of one of my other engines and most of the engine's running time was on a GM intake with a 830 cfm carb.
Have you tried bypassing the oil cooler and see what it does? Maybe a thought....

Are you running a remote filter? Did you leave the plumbing intact when you got the boat from BBT?

it is not a remote filter it screws to the oil cooler and no changes have been made. I have been told frams will do that however I have run them for years w/ no problems.
Hey BBT I might like this boat if she will run right for me. need to get it done soon so I can start on my hydro.

Chad,
I have crushed Frams on 70psi. I don't use them anymore. Try a Baldwin or WIX. WIX are available at NAPA, they call them "Napa Gold". As far as 5800 r's, isn't BBT at a much higher altitude? And if it's missing, that will easily cause a loss of 1000+ rpms. CYA

I stunk up the joint this past weekend. ran a 12.12 getting out of it at 1/2 track after I reached up to flip the face shield down (ooopppps) and sorta lost it a bit. I think that on a good clean run and a motor that was running right (both of which I didn't see all weekend) I would have been in the low 10's or possibly high 9's. No worries....we have something fresh and new we're working on for the April race :D

I've imploded a fram before and i would not use one again. I will echo infomaniac Fram is junk get a Wix. I run over 90lbs. of oil pressure and no problems with my Wix Filters.

I've never run a WIX before. I use Baldwin 279 filters. They are pretty stout. Now I have to run out and get a WIX just to check it out.

BBT,
At 7800 rpm in your circle boat, what was your mph? What was your gear and prop size? Thanks for the info.
Cole Man.

split fire plugs [/qb]Toss those Split Fire plugs! I've seen more than a few motors trashed because of those plugs. I've seen all types, boat, car, and motorcycle engines ruined due to Split Fire plugs. Worst plug for High Perf application. Don't know of any big time racing team that uses them. You're probably lucky you couldn't get 7800 out of the engine or those plugs could have fallen apart.

Absolutely. I had it happen to me, RPM's going away, though not with Split Fires. NGK here. Also, I know Fram's aren't the filter of choice and I usually use Wix, but I have used Fram HP's from time to time without a problem.
edit - I mean I use NGK's now. I can't remember what plug it was that went bad, I think Accel used to make a yellow plug? It was supposed to be the trick setup = junk.

I don't think i would change from Baldwin to Wix I've heard alot of good things about Baldwin but i haven't found anybody around here that carries them, Wix work great and they're fairly easy to find.
