I think most of the major car rental companies have rules against that in the contract.
You might try U-Haul, they have vans and pickups......won't be the coolest looking truck in the world....... But it would get the job done.
You can reserve them on their web site.....

I have rented F-150's from Budget. Depending on what you want to pull, I have also rented a S-10 Blazer/Trailblazer (same hitch) and bolted a hitch on it that I bought from U-haul. Did that for the trip home with my STV, and several other trips before buying my truck.

If you're towing cross country, the vehicle to rent is the Jeep CJ.

Depends if the trailer has brakes or not?:D
And the possibilities of some cash when you get there? Nice:D
CJ's with the 4cyl will work fine. I know...I read it here on HotTow.:)

Rent an Excursion from Hertz. Bring your own hitch bar & ball. They may have a no towing exclusion in the contract though so make sure your insurance covers you.

i tried to do this for my boat. and uhauls pickups are in town use only. and to rent a truck to go from havasu to florida was over $1500. hurtz rents trucks but there is no hitch or light plug. so you would have to buy it. and to rent from hurtz one way was about $1000.

IIRC, we rented a blazer from Budget or Hertz in NY, went to Uhaul and had a hitch put on. Then drove into Canada, picked up the boat and drove from there to Vegas. Rental was like $700ish. Hitch and lighting adapter was around $140. Just call ahead and make sure the nearest Uhaul facility has that hitch in stock...if not, they will order it for you with a CC deposit.

Every rental company has SUV's and some have crew cab 1/2 tons. Most of the suv's and pick ups have hitch receivers. NONE of the companies wants you to tow with their vehicles. Even if your personal policy could/would cover you towing in a rental, an incident in one would void the rental agreement and leave you wide open for litigation.
