We sold our Cole 22 Superhawk and are looking at a Daytona 25 with a 496 HO. (not a nappy headed HO) Sure would like some feedback on what to look for in regards to the Eliminator, pros, cons and if that 496 with the XR drive is the right setup for that hull. Also, what else do you need to do in order to get that boat trimmed for maximum efficiency. Thanks,

It's not just the top speed number you should look at. It's the over all picture with that hull. That boat is not even working until 70-80, in other words it isn't packing air and working how it was designed. Also the ride quality is much better at 80 then 60. I wouldn't look for one with less then 600-700 hp. And that will depend on weather you want to go 90 or 100. I know where you can get a brand new F-26 DCB with 600 hp. What is your budget and are you looking for new or used? If used how old? If you do a 496 you will be very disappointed and looking to upgrade by the end of your first weekend. A 25' Daytona at 60mph is like your old Cole 22 at 30 mph, huge difference in the boats and what speed is comfortable.

Eliminator, pros, cons and if that 496 with the XR drive is the right setup for that hull. :
That is like buying a Corvete and putting a colbalt motor in it...
These boat do not ride well until above 70. With that motor good luck getting there

EXACTLY. If you're going with a 496HO, get a V-Bottom. :)
(Yes, I know Mig...I've finally agreed with you on something.:D )
A 25-27 tunnel with a 496HO is just not right...Ask the WATER PUSHING, NON-AIR ENTRAPMENT Ultra boys on here...They know a thing or two about this phenomenon.;) :jawdrop:

496 and daytona shouldn’t be allowed in the same sentence. An extra 10mph is a world of difference and it only gets better from there.

Always a smartass in the crowd! At least they can still use their boat when the chop gets over 6 inches:D

25 Daytona with 425hp only 62-66. Sounds a little under rated on speed to me.

My buddy has this same set up 2002 25 with a ho
Runs low 70 with a xr . The boat rides good in ruff water bur need's more power to really make it work. Maybe a blue motor (525)

Most of the above is true, it's not enough motor for that hull. I just went thru a swap because of being under powered so why not listen and just "build it once". There are some damn nice used units out there, both DCB and Elims for GOOD PRICES. Beware the insurance on big power motors though, anything over 500hp. NSF

So A Daytona 25 with a 496 in it is worthless? Reason I ask is because I just made a deal on one today with a 496 and a Bravo One. Am I wasting my time here? this is my first Cat as well, thought I would ask. Not trying to hijack the thread.

For what you want out of the boat use and speed wise it will be great. Most people buy the cat line only for the speed, the more the better. In your purpose uses of the boat I think it will work out great. You can always do something to the 496 once you are used to the boat if you feel more speed is warranted for your needs. Remember opionions are like a@@holes around here, we all have one. So choice your boat for your needs. You made the right choice.

Go ride in a well powered Daytona before you do anything. Note at what speed it starts to fly, and what speed you can live with. The 496 should be relegated to the garage position covered in plastic. You can reinstall it when you sell the boat, and then you can put your hotrod motor in the next boat. TIMINATOR

I think the MercHO is a great choice in these size boats- sure more power would be great, but it is 'practical' for those that do not need to go 80-100 or more. I have a Merc HO in my 26 DCB, with the mid cabin open bow and have seen 78mph GPS. Its a consistent 70-72mph GPS boat. Personally, I usually drive the boat around 60 mph everywhere- confortable for everyone, it DOES pack enough air to ride on top of the lake chop, and just a fun in your face ride. If I had an endless supply of INSURANCE money, I probably would have gotten a Merc 600sci or a big whipplecharged motor, but I can't justify the $ for insurance. Whatever you decide to get, check with ANDY01 on here for insurance - an HO makes it super easy and affordable. Of course these boats can handle 800-1000 hp and great bad ass ride - but without it, you can still have a great boat and have a blast. I know I do - 135 hours in a year :D :D
Roln 20s <--- why does everyone have to pick on us HO cat guys -- oh yeah, mine goes just as fast as everyone else's when I idle through the channel

An HO will be fine for your first cat, unless your intent is to fly across the lake all the time. I have an older 25 with the 502MAG and it's been a great boat for us. I have run 74 (GPS) with a light load, 71-72 with our normal load of crap. Plenty fast for what we do. We are one of the very few that ski, tube, and wakeboard behind a cat!

My 26 Daytona has a Merc 525 and it runs about 85 or so. On St. Patty's weekend with 6 people and full tanks we ran right at 80. I'm extremely happy with this as I have no desire to go 100+ in my boat and this thing starts every time.
I'd be happy to take you for a ride so you can see the difference between the 496HO and a 525.

Don't listen to some of these homos in here. The new 25 runs great at 72-74 mph all day with the 496 HO and packs air just fine.
However if I had to do it over again I would spend the extra dough to get the extra 10 mph you would get the HP motor. Not because of the ride but because its just "easier" to make if faster prior to the purchase than after the purchase.
Bottom line the 496HO runs all day long @ mid 70's, with no problems and is insurable.
The 525will run all day long @ mid 80's. Few more bucks and still no problems but more difficult to insure (but not impossible)
If you are looking for the speed try to scrap together the extra bucks now for the 525 and be done with it.
But what the hell do I know ;) ;) .....

How about throwing a Pro Charger on the 496 HO?

If you are already talking about a Pro Cahrger then get the 525. You can always add the whipple later to that. Remember you are not just getting the bigger motor you are also getting the upgraded XR Drive. Just my .02

Or don't do a Merc motor all together and do a custom build if you are ordering the boat brand new and want more power.
Just another option.........

Anytime that is what this site is for. I hada 27 Shadow (Ultra) with a 525 and it ran 80-82 and it was great. Now my new 27 Shadow runs better than that and the boat handles the chop even better. It just depends on your wants and needs. The more air you pack the better the ride will be in choppy conditions. Good luck and keep us posted.

I wouldn't. The 496 is a boat anchor. Its a great stock motor but not built to be heavily modified.
If you want an S/C or want to go fast I would build custom motor or go with the 525. It will save you $$ in the long run (the cost of the rebuild of the 496).
the only reason I haven't modified my 496 was because the internals are junk and we are content with the slow motor (for now at least )
If I wasn't going to buy another boat I would pull the 496 and sell it and start over with something else.
Leave the 496 stock or go buy a custom if you want to go fast.
