I was just cruising at around 40mph Saturday morning and the next thing you know a loud bang. Tuzrvr was right there when it happened and gave me a tow to the raft up for the poker run. I dropped the boat off with Chris at Prestige yesterday and today I got the bad news. When the gears went, it took the upper housing with it. I've got 2 choices, buy a remanufactured upper unit, which will be the older XR style, I have the new style now, or just buy a complete new XR drive. Price difference between the 2 will probably be around $2,500. I could always try and sell the lower unit I have now, but who knows how much I could get for that.
What would you do?
I have to give Chris at Prestige major props for jumping in and taking a look at the problem right away and giving me all my options. Can't beat the service at Prestige.

I would assume a NEW unit would carry the factory warranty for "X" period of time and the newest XR's have an upgraded cone clutch that shifts much better and smoother than the older style.

wait until memorial day weekend...Saturday night when everyone is drunk and passed out..You will have thousands of XR drives to choose from just pick the one you like...
No problem on the tow. Someday I might need the favor in return..

Chris said the upper gear stack went, who knows the cause. I always do my regular service on the boat. Chris did say that when they do a drive service, they not only change the gear lube and check all the seals, but also inspect the old lube for any metal, a sign that you may be losing a tooth or something. I don't know if all shops do this, but I'll definitely be have Prestige do all my service from now on.

Just for reference: My drive took a crap on the top because my shifter cable started coming loose. It wasn't fully going into gear and it started shearing the gears just slightly enough to put shavings all over. (Or at least that is what I was told). You couldn't feel it, but it did start getting hard to get into gear. By the time I noticed it was too late. :(

When you say that you do your service do you mean that you personally do it? Theres a lot more to it than just fluid change, that why my cuz does mine. and that incluges pulling the OD and alignment check and check for any other telltale signs of something giving up. Sometimes shit just happens though. Sorrry to hear, hope it works out and Max Machine is the tits, no doubt. NSF

Selling the lower unit at a fair price shouldn't be a problem. You could get an easy $2500 out of it and that would offset your cost difference.
If not using Max Machine, I would go new, sell the used lower for $2500.
