He seems like a good man, but with only a couple of terms as a Senator from a mid sized state, I'm afraid he would not be taken seriously by "swing voters".

He is a solid candidate (hopefully). He has been involved in politics long before he was an actor. His first acting role was playing himself in a a movie about Parole Board coruption in Tennessee. They producers could not find anybody fitting to play him so they recruited him. He easily could still be a Senator from Tennessee, but chose not to seek another term.
