I have and still own both. v-drives are faster than jets, but jets have there goods, like forward and reverse:D Also jets are always safe with kids since no props to worry about, and you can run in real low water. You can also throw a roost which always looks cool. But it depends on what you are looking to do with it.

The only valid point here being you can run in real low water.
A v-drive can be fitted with a transmission (as many are) for forward/reverse and the prop safety deal is a long played out bunch of shit. Many of the guys in here were raised with these propeller boats from day 1 and haven't had 1 problem. I see it as a parenting problem if your kids get hurt. I like watching the jet guys hose down tall bridges and deserving jetskiers.:cool:

If you get cut by a V-Drive you have to be wanting to. The boat has to be in gear (and we all know V-Drives idle fast) and you would have to be hanging off the back, with your body submerged up to your chest (like you are sitting in a chair) and your legs would have to go under the cav plates, under the rudder and then about 2' under the boat to get whacked, now that takes some SKILLZ if you ask me, oh yeah, do all that while the boat is moving at 5-10mph. lol.
Now if you get ran over by one, you will get jacked up, but if you get ran over by any boat there is slim chance for you.
Outboards I can see the whole unsafe prop rule.

Last year My wife and I fell in love with a old eliminator cruiser (Jet), bought it and love it. I loved the old v-drive but only have room for one boat. Jets are definitely the only truely safe boat. No doubt about it. The only thing that could possibly go wrong, is if the steering cable breaks. Sending the boat into a 180 and sinking. Then you would have to figure some way of getting it off the bottom of the lake, somehow.

Have you ever lost steering in a v-drive? Not much different. When the cable broke on my old v-drive I about got launched out of the boat and I wasnt really going that fast, just didnt expect it.

an aluminium white water jet boat. Went to the white water races in Riggins
Idaho last month and those things look like a lot of fun. What I couldn't
believe was how nice the finish work is on those boats. They are much straighter, and cleaner than any fiberglass boat.

I look at it like this. Beating a jet with a v-drive...well, that's usually no big deal, but beating a v-drive with a jet, now that's a blast! (especially a hydro) LOL!! :D :sqeyes:

Grew up in a '22 Schiada I/O. Dad trained us to always let him know when we were jumping in the water. Never had any accidents. I had a jet for 5 years and liked the shallow water aspect and the roosting and it was very safe. This year I stepped up to a more family friendly boat and bought a '22 schiada V-drive. I love the look of the V-drive and the handling is awesome. It has taken some getting use to with manuevering at low speed and ATTEMPTING to back up. Each propulsion has its + and -. Like anything else enough seat time really helps you learn the boat. I am also noticing that when I put the Schiada on the trailer I don't just pull it right out. have to make sure the strut is not sitting on trailer cross member, the plates are all the way up etc. There is definitely more to worry about with all that gear under there. My stepdaughter is getting the same safety lecture as I did as a kid and the wife and kid are learning the ins and outs of boating. At first when I saw this thread I thought Bob may be thinking of buying a jet for his daughter Lisa but then I thought No he would buy her a V-drive.
