Does it take, to make a V-Drive 18 ft runner style bottom hull, lake layup, go over 100 mph.
Thanks in advance

I dunno hp numbers. But a decent BBC with 12 to 1 compression...decent roller cam and Iron 990's, tunnel ram dealio will do it. Prolly the right single carb setup will do it too. Lot depends on the boat and how good the bottom is (hooks).
Remember that is at sea level type air. And after 100 mph it gets a lot tougher.

Less will do it, in a 1900lb Hondo.

single 850 (flowed)
flat tappet cam
12.54:1
per GPS 101mph with 12's & 11x16prop, runs better mph with 18's

Cole tr2 runner with 454, LS6 450hp + or - 16 pitch 11 1/8" casale with 18's turned 6500rpn to 6700 rpm ran 87mph, most days. :rollside:

Yeah...thinking about this we did have a 75 Cole tr-1 with a flat tappet in it and it ran 102.

Seems like a lot of slip with an 11-1/8"x16 prop
Turning 6500rpm with 18's and a 16 pitch prop and 87mph gives you about 25% slip, are your numbers right?

It took about 650 hp to make my Sanger run 100. The Canyon is much more efficient could probably do it with 550 hp.

And probably less than that. Canyon's are very good boats.

I thought you just put all of the billet trick stuff on any boat and it will go 100MPH! RIGHT? ('76 Hondo Sprint is a flat not a runner) Loren, quit showing off your knowledge.

Or you just move to Reno. All the guys UP here tell me their boats run at least 100...especially the jets. Maybe it's like real estate. Location, location, location.

 550 hp. correct set up = 100mph from what I have learned not only myself but from Bill Devaney "Cole TR-2" builder and Bob McGrady "Wesco" builder. If everything is "RIGHT" you should see a 100mph with ease.

The numbers are right, yes to much slip. Was ready to try new prop but lost a valve. New motor but not back in the boat at this time. j.j.

My buddy has a sanger runner bottom with a 12-1 468, aluminum pro topline heads (no porting), old weiand tunnel ram, 2-850's on av gas. Spins 22's (not sure exactly his prop) around 7000 & to the plus side. He runs 105 on the gps consistantly! Very quick too! This I am told is abnormal for most sanger runners as his is by no means a light weight deal.

Man what a loaded question
I'd say depending on weight, set up, prop and gearing 102mph should be in the 10.00-10.40 range on average. :)

514 12 to 1 comp. Trick Flow heads roller cam with 2-750's with 11-1/2 x 15 with 22's at 6800 got 84 on the GPS.Well after alot of head scratching because we know it should run at least a 100mph we remembered that the prop on the boat was back cut so much to give a lot of slip to get the boat out of the hole when pulling skiers with the 400 hp motor that was in it at the time. And that's with a boat that's bare hull weight is around 850 lbs.Man that prop's ears are at least 1/3 less the size than the other props my buddy had on the shelf.Going to go to the lake in March to try out some more props before I order on from Menkins.Menkins actually made this prop also.

Barry felt so bad when that came out in the HB article. When HB called him to get the info on the boat. His father had just had a stroke at the NJBA race and was in a coma and his mom was in the hospital to. Berry has had a very tough year with his parents.

My Hondo was a battle ship, very heavy. It was set up as a ski boat. The v-drive was around 20" to close to the transom. But.....
With a 10.4:1 BBF, spinning 6K, 18 gear, big eared stellings. I got 85 mph out of her.
Tough to compare to anything.
