Has anyone ever made an air shifter work with a dirt bike?
I'm in the process of building a go kart and just got a deal on a WR 500 motor and trans. I'd like to slap an air shifter on this puppy and slam gears like a formual car. Anyone ever done this? Any suggestions?

Pick up a road racing world. There are a few companies selling very good systems. But my question is why? A dirt bike should have no problem with full throttle clutchless shifts. All my dirt bikes I've owned were able to do this, with no problems, ever.(including my present CR500.)

I want to make a paddle shift for the Kart. The air shifter will or at least should allow me to do that.

We used to do shifter Karts.Emmick Ent. in Sacramento CA.916-383-2288 can help you.FYI you will have your hands full with 500cc's in a kart.250 Shifters are almost undriveable.Good luck.

You should have no problem just shifting it with linkage clutch-less, that's how all the shifter cars I've driven were, that thing is gonna burn tires like crazy with a 500 4stroke , Billy Dunsmore has a 125cc shifter trainer cart and it's crazzzzy fast, they are a ton of fun and are just about the fastest accelerating vehicle you can get into. I wanna see some pics and video when you get yours done!

We know it is going to HAUL ASS!
We just finished a 2 seater Kart that is set up for off roading. Wishbone suspension, etc., etc. It has a 16HP V-Twin Honda motor we pulled off a pressure washer, using a centrifigal <sp> clutch it's running about 50mph so I can't wait to see what this single seater with the WR500 motor is going to do.

I raced a 125cc shiftercart for a few years and found that after I got the shifter linkage just right I could just hold the shift lever back and lift the throttle a bit to upshift. This was after carefully polishing all the parts in the trans. Most are lift to shift anyway. There are devices out there that interrupt the ignition for a split second during shifting, but they are not legal in my club, so I have not tried them that but they can provide a faster and more accurate upshift.
There are other options but are costly and not reliable. Some use CO2, others are electric solenoids.
Have fun seems you have a monster on your hands. We once put a 450 Honda on a street cart years ago. Bad tires poor frame, almost no brakes. I whimped at 4th gear on a highway. Cops could not even come close. It was fun fun stuff we had to stash that thing for a month.

How fast could a 250cc shifter kart get up to?

I used to race Zip karts... (shifter on road race tracks). Clutch only for first gear.... no air shifter needed... Of course we ran 125cc Rotax... 120mph. the 250cc ran about 140 mph. Kart alone weighed not much more than 250 lbs. or so. :D

A person I know, was clocked at 168 mph, at Daytona, he was driving a 250 cc, shifter cart.
