I have been noticing more and more when taking off from a dead stop the Burb seems to be in 2nd or 3rd and then downshifts to 1st. It's an '02 Z71 Burb 4X4 with the 3.73 & 81,000 miles. I do some towing but nothing like y'all do out west? Anybody lost a tranny at 80,000?

Lost my tranny in a 2001 Yukon at about 90,000. Was told by the repair guy that it was about average.

daughters truck was acting like that and it turned out to be the throttle positioning switch sending crazy messages to the computer and back to the tranny!

In my 94 Silverado I lost the trans at 160,000 miles. I replaced that trans at 415,000 miles. I don't drive it much anymore. But it has a new trans in it and I can still bark second gear. It has 432,000 on it now.

Not likely--thats a pretty typical piston by-pass scenario...could run that way for years. Basically rolls a seal over on the low piston.
That symptom aside--4L60E can and will fail at anytime, there is no set mileage interval

So at the next service tell the dealer to check the puter.

First pull the trans pan and look for debris. If you have any metal chunks or clutch material the tranny is done and either needs to be rebuilt or replaced. You didn,t mention anything about a ses lite on so electronically everything should be ok. If everything else checks out ok I would replace the 2-3 shift solenoid. Let me know if you need any help. ... or, you could describe the issue to them and ask them fix it.

Any codes???The 4L60 is a pretty good trans, I dont think 90k is an average.
Sounds like its time for Mr dealer....

120k was the average of the 1/2 tons of the construction fleet I managed that a few years ago. The 4L80's usually made it to trade in at 180k to 220k.
We quit buying 1/2 tons for the superintendents for this reason.
The other major problem was the intake manifold gaskets blowing out in the Vortec 350's. If you were lucky it would blow to the outside where you could see it...otherwise...into to the oil pan.
