View Full Version : What do you spend per year on your boat

Exclude the obvious like storage, payment, insurance.
What about gas, maintenance, repairs, water toys, etc... The saying goes, a boat is a hole in the water you pour money in to. Ball park how much you are pouring in to your hole :D

The boat is cheap to maintain, it's keeping the ice chest topped off that really adds up. :)

Well if we don't count the ice chest..which is HUGE $
Factor in up grades-
Whipple up grade
External steering
Subs, amps and speaker up grades
GPS speedo and complete matching bezels
Drive showers
Prop
Sea strainers
We are some where around 26k, but the season still early..:D :( :D
It's a deep dark dank hole....

About $60.00 a day for gas. I spent $200.00 on oil, fuel and oil filters, outdrive oil, water pump impeller, etc. for this season. I'll do the work myself.

I am currently working on a Stereo. Proving to be more expensive than previous motor mods.
In our boat operating expenses are very low. I can run most all weekend on my tanks 20 x 2 but I only have a 350 Mag with some mods. SB Chevys are the least expensive to bolt power adders to. Last year the goal was to hit 70 mph. Done. This is until I break the Gen II Alpha.
This year the goal is to hurt my ear drums:).
So the short answer is... it looks like around $3k last year and around the same this year but my business is hopping so there will be fewer river trips.
If I make no mods then were less than $300 a weekend on boat gas and stuff. And that is with a full cooler.

I'm with you, I don't really want to know.... I do know however the joy that being on the boat and being out in Havsusa brings to the family is well worth it no matter what the cost. :)

This question sucks.... Get ready to get depressed people. I had to do the math. I spent 11k in the last year with all repairs, maintenence, insurance etc. Divide that by about 80 hours and it costs $137 per hour to run the thing. I hate to see what all the ballers on here are paying:jawdrop: I bet 30k isnt that hard for some of the boats out there

Thats my goal, 70mph+, for this year.... Think some room in my SB chev to hit that mark from 64mph.
Trying to decide which one will be the budget maker. Gold or BLK? The answer will be this years budget! :D

I think it depends on how you use it and the type of boat you operate.
-If you own a jet, You'll spend way more on gas than an I/O.
-It also depends where you boat and if you tow it there everytime or store it. (trailer tires, brake service, more gas in the truck)
-Then if your boat isnt a reliable boat, then you can count on lots of repair bills.
-Another thing to consider is how often you take it out and what you do with it. If your just cruising around or if you hauling ass all day and/or pulling tubes/skis/wakeboards, that will help determine your gas bill.
-Do you service your own boat or do you take it in? What is your service scheduale? For example: a big blower motor in a V-Drive needs more attention than a 350 in a Chaparal.
-Upgrades.
-You can aslo look at launching fees, hotels, campgrounds, river house payments, association fees, food, beer, replacing stuuf that you loose or break......and the list goes on.

Picking my boat up from the shop tomorrow.
New water pump, changed all fluids, and replaced 3 missing cup holders. Total cost $450.00. Picking up a new battery for it tomorrow which will run me about $60.00.
I'm figuring about $50.00 a day in fuel. I'll probably run the boat 20-30 days this summer so on the high end $1500.00 in fuel for the entire summer.
So total summer of running the boat is going to be about $2,000.00. Next summer will be cheaper due to the water pump only needing replaced every 2-3 seasons.

Well, I spend $2,400. a year just for the slip that I use when out on Mohave. I better just stop right there :(.
Can't really put a price on the fun you have though......One of those things that if you do it you just have to understand it is an expensive hobby.

You just might regret that? Those babies are nice.
Stick one in Spam and see how you do?
I took a carbed 350 mag and put the Edelbrock kit on and in it. Went from 63 mph to 70.6 on GPS but the total cost was about $4k or so with other goodies.
I also have a boat hull that was easier to speed up being a tunnel hull.

Accountant went over the bills last year and broke it down as $1300 per hour on the boat....don't think I will be using the boat quite as much this year... 99 hours last year and motors need to be gone through every 100 hours....

This will make me wonder why I did not follow my father advise "Don't purchase a boat, become best friends with someone that already owns one". So much for that, I am the friend that owns one and enjoy every minute on it.
I look at this way, I will pay what ever I need to to keep the boat moving and flaoting. The stress from work ends when the boat hits the water. That is priceless.
Adding it up (weekend in Havasu), including gas (boat and truck while trailering to Havi), hotel, food, beer and everything else is apx $750 to 1K a weekend.

Havasu1
05-14-2007, 02:55 PM
The boat is relatively cheap compared to the cost of diesel for the 600 mile round trip from San Diego to Havi, the mortgage on the Havi house, all the other toys out there. I heard this once in a movie "money is only something you need in case you don't die tomorrow". So much for retirement.
