help need to wire in a point dist. from scratch does anyone have the diagram?
its in a older boat

from ground to points to neg side of coil.

Yep, black wire from dist to - side of coil. That's all there is.
Make sure the other side goes "12v from ignition switch to BALLAST RESISTOR. Ballast resistor to + side of coil."
Tachometer to - side of coil by the way. :D They don't like the + side.

False. It will run without the condenser, but the points won't last any appreciable time.

OK, what ever you say. All these years I've been concerned with soak time for charging a device I didn't need............MP

Wasn't trying to be a smart-azz. Condenser acts as "shock absorber" to prevent the points from arcing. Points would still do their job as a switching device, but service life would be unacceptable.
I changed careers when the "Big 3" started using solid state ignition.
