Crazy morning this morning. Heading to work this morning from the South O.C. up the 241 tollraod at about 5:00am, and out of nowhere came a large deer. I hit it at about 65mph on the front quarter panel and it apparently swung around and hit the rear door. Unfortunately, it didn't make it.:(
Just happy to not have been injured. I still shaking. Here's a couple pics.
Back to another martini.

Certain areas around the world this is a very common occurance. Glad to see you made it safely. :)
Saab actually conducts whats now known as the Moose Crash Test, since Moose are quite common in Sweden.

I'm guessing it will be in the neighborhood of $15k. The car is fairly new and they won't total it. I'll know more tommorow.

I didn't see any either but it was dark when I left the scene. The guy at the body shop told me that there is hair stuck all over the car.

CHP called animal control and it was gone when I came back from work today. I would imagine you could carve out quite a few steaks. I hear that in many states if you hit a deer, you keep the deer. Crazy way to hunt.

No airbag action? My wife had a lady turn left in front of her and b/c the truck she hit was higher than ours the bags didn't come out. 14k damage on a 2 yr old 1500 chevy and they fixed it. I got her a Lexus after that.
I bet seeing that deer right in front of you was pretty scary at 5:00 am.:jawdrop:

Scared the crap out of me. The airbag did not deploy. Must have been just enough on the side that it wasn't needed.

Your not alone, here's what a doe can do at 50 MPH. My wife hit this one last Tues. I thought it would be totaled but they say it'll be ready Weds. of this week! Adjuster told my wife "no airbag deployment, no total."http://www.***boat.com/image_center/showphoto.php?photo=127568http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/thumbs/P5070028.JPGhttp://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/thumbs/P5070025.JPGhttp://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/medium/P5070043.JPG

I saw a horse total an 80's model Cadillac. Incredible the damage animals can do. And yes you are lucky it did not come through the windshield, it makes a hell of a mess inside. I had pictures of one that did a while back, I'll have to dig them up. Airbags are funny, I've seen cars get the front end ripped off from a vehicle traveling perpendicular and the bags wont deply. Has to be hit just right. The computers are pretty smart and know when they should and should not deploy.

No airbags because it hit too high, up near the grill. Airbag sensors are down behind the bumper normally.

Damn!! Glad you weren't hurt. I've dodged 2 in the last 6 years on the toll road and my buddys wife wasnt so lucky....tagged one on Antonio at 11pm with a Mustang at 55mph. Really did a job on the 'stang, and they never found the deer.

Air bags are funny...some time fender benders and they blow, others full on crashes and they don't.
Normally when they blow the car is totaled as they are $$$$$$ to replace.
the side air bags are the ones that are just nuts... 3k+ each.

Thanks Scott. We had a televised special event yesterday and had to be there at 6am for a run through. Normally I don't have to be there until 10:00am.;)
Just came back from the body shop that AAA took it to, and they have to replace the hood, front bumper, front quarter panel, real door, and possibly the rear quarter panel. The only thing fixable is the driver door. Still haven't seen the estimate but I imagine it will be pricey.

My dad hit a 700lb burro in Parker and totaled his dodge van about 7 years ago.(Like stated something that heavy coming up over your hood would be a very bad thing)

My buddy was northbound on the Los Alisos on ramp to the 241 North....WHAM! He pulled over, not knowing what happened took a look at the front of the car. New CLS benz Hood smashed, windshield busted, headlamp gone and blood all over. Within, 30 seconds he saw the red lights from a chippy coming down the ramp. Cop took his flashlight to the side of the car and said "That's a lot of fur". They never found that deer.
Glad to hear you're ok. Had an uncle decappitated from a deer.

OK, for all you scooter riders out there, put this into your thought proscessors......
Last fall I took off about dusk for a ride after dinner. Wound my way down the highway toward the lake. It was a beautiful warm evening, and I had the wick twisted pretty tight once I got down into the hills & curves by the lake.
I was going around a familiar corner with the pegs almost scraping asphault, on the edge of the "velocity limit"! All of a sudden I saw a doe jump out into the road, and she saw me at the same time and tried to alter her course.
At the speed I was going around the curve, I could not alter my track through the corner. She was able to miss me & ran along beside me, her hoofs clacking on the asphault for about 50' before she was able to go back off the road and into the woods.
Moral of the story, I ride a lot slower now at this time of evening when the deer come out.
Look at the damage done to some of these vehicles, and think about it.
